Not just for home use?

[edit]

This article currently states in its introductory sentence that: "A computer appliance is a home appliance". I believe this is overly-specific; the term "appliance" (referring to computing devices) is also used by commercial and industrial enterprises, and also by businesses which produce and market computer appliances for sale to other businesses. For example, in 2009 the electronic data storage company Data Domain described their rack-mounted storage device as an "Appliance". Additionally, this article currently includes a section titled "Appliances in industrial automation", which by definition is describing computer appliances being used in a non-home application.

Could I, or someone else, change the introduction to this article so that it does not exclude certain devices from being classified as computer appliances based solely upon market application? FlintTD (talk) 21:29, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, and I have rewritten the first sentence accordingly. Wasted Time R (talk) 22:26, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much! --FlintTD (talk) 06:20, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't make sense

Why would a PC be called an appliance and be categorized as a washing machine just because it serves one purpose? I have a laptop that is strictly used to remotely control a 3D printer, so why would I now call the laptop an appliance? The other thing about that you generally can't open and service them is completely false. I bought one of those mini PC's to use as a router / firewall and I literally had to open it up to install an SSD and RAM, and there was nothing unusual about this. At the same time most people would never open up a laptop, so to say that it's an appliance because people don't open it is completely false. To me an appliance is something that may in practical terms be considered to be part of a house, things like microwaves, stoves, washing machines and so on. The other thing is simply a computer, weather it runs Linux, Windows, or something else, and regardless of what you use it for. A Linux server for example may only be used for one task but it is a computer and not an appliance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.23.250.2 (talk) 14:13, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
