Polygamy

[edit]

Article states : "In some economically poor areas where infant mortality is high but children are a vital source of labor to maintain the earning capacity of the family, polygamy provides more children. Yet, in more modern times, some Christian states despite the existence of polygyny in the Bible have defined marriage as the union of one man to one woman "to the exclusion of all others"

Problem: this statement, while derogatory in context, displays a massive ignorance regarding Biblical texts. The Bible contains many large historical narratives that record history. Because you can find an individual that murdered someone, raped someone, committed incest, etc etc, does not mean it is condoned or accepted in Christian morality. That said, I find it misleading that the author did not bother to look up the Biblical texts that specifically address the morality of this issue (and not the historical books). I also find this statement comical in that the author believes their 2 cent knowledge of Christianity trumps the 2000 years of writings of the Church (New Covenant writings).

For these reasons (the opinionated nature and misinformation) I will delete this portion. Perhaps the author may instead wish to include a section on biblical recorded polygamy instead of accusing the religion of not understanding their own Holy Book. 50.93.123.217 (talk) 19:41, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I concur. 155.213.224.59 (talk) 17:41, 12 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Polygamy

[edit]

This whole article seemed to be a WP:SOAP about how polygamy is normal, good and desirable; and how it is unnatural to ban polygamous marriage. This is very inappropriate because: 1) it violates WP:NPOV and 2) it hijacks the article which is supposed to be about the legal concept of conflict of laws as it applies to marriage laws, not about the rights and wrongs of polygamy. Most of the text on polygamy is also unsourced and WP:OR. I removed part of it, but more work needs to be done. 2A02:2F0F:B2FF:FFFF:0:0:6463:C62A (talk) 23:28, 23 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
