We need more countries described here, so far we've got only three and one of those is an ex-nation. --Agamemnon2 06:14, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Greece[edit]

Military of Greece article contains this link: Greek anti-conscription/conscientious objector website. Perhaps someone do something with it. See also Conscription_in_Greece#Concientious objectors. JonHarder 19:24, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Spain[edit]

I've changed the figure of insumisos who publicly declared themselves from "tens" to !"thousands". The anthology produced by the Movimiento Objeción de Conciencia in 2002, En legítima desobediencia: Tres décadas de objeción, insumisión y antimilitarismo (Traficantes de Sueños) contains a chronology of insumisión with the following figures (pp.323-327): 1989 - first two insumisos sentence to 13 months in prison 1990 - 2,450 insumisos, 130 of them arrested 1991 - first sentences of two years, four months and 1 day 1992 - 107 trials against insumisos 1995 - 348 insumisos in prison, and introduction of New Penal Code (punishing insumisión with inhabilitación) 2000 - 460 insumisos inhabilitados (declared unfit for public service) have the duration of this prohibtion reduced to 4 years 2002 - there was an amnesty for 4000 insumisos who had been tried and some 20 insumiso-desertores, Xabier Agirre Aranburu, Rafael Ajangiz, Pedro Ibarra and Rafal Sainz de Rozas, La insumisión: un singular ciclo histórico de desobediencia civil (Tecnos, 1998) gives the following figures for imprisoned insumisos - 17 in 1992, 157 in 1993, 165 in 1994, 282 in 1995 and 315 in 1996 Howard Clark (talk) 21:29, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Three pages with a lot of overlap[edit]

I added a section on Britain in the Conscientious objector page, without even realising that this page existed. It didn't show up on the search. I have now added cross-links between the two and also to Conscription .

A full edit would be a good idea. But it would best be done by someone researching the topic a bit and adding new material as well as shuffling what already exists. I have other priorities and no easy access to a major library which would have the standard books on the matter.

Added some more for Britain. --GwydionM 10:10, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Linked most of the separate articles that cover this topic.. I'd have thought East Germany (which no longer exists) should be put with the rest. But I don't want to do this unilaterally.--GwydionM 18:18, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Only military?[edit]

Have a look at William Tebb - the assertion in the BMJ that the term was introduced into English law as a result of arguments over vaccination seems likely to be true.

Did the rest of the world follow on, or evolve the concept and laws about it independently?Midgley 18:45, 24 January 2006 (UTC) From teh other article Midgley 23:36, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Constance Braithwaite's book - Conscientious Objection to Compulsions under the Law (Williams Session, 1995) - studies conscientious objection in Britain in four spheres: - the law regarding oaths - the law regarding compulsory military service - the law regarding compulsory vaccination against smallpox, and - the law regarding religious workshops and religious instruction in schools Braithwaite suggests that the 1689 Toleration Act made "the first legal concessions to conscientious objectors to oaths" Howard Clark (talk) 21:12, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reorganization of Civilian service articles[edit]

I feel it'd be a good idea to break off sections, such as Civilian service in Finland which have significant independent-article potential. On that note, the article on Civilian service needs to be addressed and expanded significantly. --Agamemnon2 09:30, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There should be included an external link zo the international "Manifesto against conscription and the military system" (with a list of all signatories between 1993 and 2007), official website: http://home.snafu.de/mkgandhi/manifest.htm. Chrbartolf 13:40, 10 January 2007 (UTC)Chrbartolf[reply]

Merge?[edit]

These three pages still overlap a lot - it would be better either to merge this page and Conscientious objector, or take some parts out of that page and move them here. What do people think?Hopsyturvy 08:37, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
