Relationship to "Thunder Road

[edit]

The following is unreferenced, and I have never heard or read of Steve making this claim. It certainly could be true that there is an intentional reference to the earlier song by Earle, but this seems like it may be speculation. (Earle tends to talk about the sources of his songs, so a lack of explicit reference makes me doubt the connection.) I am going to change it to say that there are similariites, please feel free to give some supporting evidence and change it back.

The song "Copperhead Road" contains subtle references to "The Ballad of Thunder Road", another song about moonshine running. The second verse talks about the sheriff informing the boy's mother of his dad's (implied) death while "headin' down to Knoxville with the weekly load" (in "Thunder Road", the bootlegger ran off Kingston Pike outside Bearden, a community in Knoxville). 208.102.38.231 (talk) 16:11, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. Keep in mind that Knoxville was a major market for mountain moonshiners, so two songs mentioning bootleggers driving to and from Knoxville isn't particularly noteworthy. Bms4880 (talk) 23:00, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes - I thought about deleting it entirely as non-noteworthy, but didn't want to start an edit war. That is me above, just on a different computer. 99.43.32.160 (talk) 00:53, 16 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Drug censorship

[edit]

A friend of mine living in Missouri claims that during the 90s, his local radio station would always cut off the final verse of the song, removing all references to marijuana. Are there any sources/information for this happening in other markets and/or by the record company? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.110.234.20 (talk) 01:56, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"F the CC" as one of his later songs put it. Although whether he stuck by that position when the boot was on the other foot is another matter. 82.1.7.156 (talk) 14:57, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Anti-Gun

[edit]

"and "The Devil's Right Hand" reminds that guns create problems rather than solving them" That's presented as a fact, it's actually just the singer/songwriter's opinion. Lone-wolf (talk) 20:10, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dafoe?

[edit]

Okay, the music video for Copperhead Road shows a man that looks just like actor Willem Dafoe. Does anyone know anything about this? I can't seem to find any connection to the two (other than Dafoe is famous for his vietnam movie Platoon), but I can't find any mention of the actor from the music video, either. Yet, it's driving me nuts, 'cuz I'd swear it's him. Anyone wanna take a swing at this?

Added 6 Dec 2014 by Tony - I think that it looks like Sam Rockwell (starred in 'The Green Mile' as 'Wild Bill' Wharton)

Added 09 Oct 2015 by Scott - Well you have the movie right but the wrong actor. It looks so much like Tom Berenger (Sgt. Barnes from platoon) that I looked it up. His IMBG page doesn't list it though. Great song though! It certainly looks like Tom Berenger to me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.225.71.148 (talk) 19:41, 22 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like Brian Bosworth to me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Inkslinger98 (talkcontribs) 02:28, 28 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I think it is Peter Weller, actor from a film called Fifty Fifty (and Robo Cop). The actor does not look like any of the people others have mentioned as well as this video is from 88. Some would have been too young. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:2000:1105:A217:7840:F8F:4911:8AD0 (talk) 12:25, 13 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

RfC

[edit]

I noticed this article was listed on the RfC page. Wouldn't it have been better to raise the issue on the talk page first? KeithD (talk) 18:32, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I did not know it exsisted, but yea lets talk..Have to get to a meeting, Be back soon. 15:00EST Scott 19:01, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
So the issue is about the external link that keeps being added and taken away? The external link doesn't work in my browser. Given that it's not accessible to all, it probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia. I can't make any comment as to the content of it. Why do you think it should be in or out? KeithD (talk) 19:11, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The policy on external links is pretty clear: "...avoid sites requiring payment, registration, or extra applications (Flash, Java, etc.) to see the relevant content...". Also, since the link doesn't work for me, I can't tell if it's violating other parts of the policy: linking to copyvio material, for example. --Carnildo 20:14, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Lets delete it, better yet, let me delete it. Deleted 20:22, 26 September 2005 (UTC)

Wouldn't it have been better to raise the issue on the talk page first? Yes. HOwever, when I raised the issue on the talk pages of other articles to which Scott has added such links, this was the result :-( . Andy Mabbett 20:31, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Copperhead

[edit]

What can be said about this wthout speculation? It could allude both to the copper still used in moonshining and to the copperhead snake that strikes without warning, showing that you shouldn't mess with the character in the song. 86.140.108.169 01:47, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

...i thought it was just the name of the road...Skiendog (talk) 03:27, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, "Copperhead" was also the term for a southerner who fought for the Union rather than the CSA during the war... wouldn't read too much into it, it's just a road. 82.1.7.156 (talk) 14:56, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
