Successful good article nomination[edit]

I am glad to report that this article nominee for good article status has been promoted. This is how the article, as of July 30, 2007, compares against the six good article criteria:

1. Well written?: I've done some work here, including expansion of the intro, but I don't see too much room for improvement here.
2. Factually accurate?: I fixed a few things, but generally accurate.
3. Broad in coverage?: addresses all the cultural topics of the period.
4. Neutral point of view?: Generally quite so, the work in the philosophy section is balanced. The intro was doing a little bit of cheerleading for the accomplishments of the dynasty, and we need to be especially careful to keep it within the context of ancient Chinese history rather than making general assertions about all of Chinese history.
5. Article stability? Obvious.
6. Images?: I think the image gallery works really well.

If you feel that this review is in error, feel free to take it to a GA review. Thank you to all of the editors who worked hard to bring it to this status, and congratulations. — VanTucky (talk) 01:15, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikified Song Dynasty in lead[edit]

I wikified Song Dynasty in the opening sentence rather than further into the rticle. --68.9.116.76 (talk) 00:25, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Copyvio issue?[edit]

Some text in the WP article is identical to sentences here: http://www.chinavoc.com/history/song.htm
I have no idea which lifted text from which, or whether both have plagiarised an existing source. Just a flag for editors. hamiltonstone (talk) 01:01, 6 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Hamiltonstone. I was the primary editor of this page in its current form. I did a little investigation, and it appears that on 30 July 2007 a User:Steven Walling added the said material to the introduction. Since he expanded the intro in 2007 and the copyright for www.chinavoc.com is extended as far as 2007, it is not possible for me to judge who was responsible for initially writing the material. I would suggest contacting him, but in the meantime that part can be excised from the beginning. Thanks for checking this out! Cheers.--Pericles of AthensTalk 01:46, 16 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Painting[edit]

I have been doing some work improving the biographies of Song dynasty painters, as well as the artistic movements surrounding them. I thought the article specifically lacked reference to any other wikipedia pages that could actually further elucidate the tradition of chinese painting within its context. So I was thinking I would like to add a bit to one of the pre-existing paragraphs in the visual arts section:

However, even though intricate bronze-casting, ceramics and lacquerware, jade carving, sculpture, architecture, and the painting of portraits and closely viewed objects like birds on branches were held in high esteem by the Song Chinese, landscape painting was paramount.[2] By the beginning of the Song Dynasty a distinctive landscape style had emerged; artists mastered the formula of creating intricate and realistic scenes placed in the foreground, while the background retained qualities of vast and infinite space, with distant mountain peaks rising out of high clouds and mist, as streaming rivers would run from afar into the foreground.[3]

I have a reference for that statement I added aswell. Adrianturcato (talk) 18:16, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ceramics[edit]

It needs more text on ceramics. There isn't enough text to support the pictures. The sentence "The making of glazed and translucent porcelain and celadon wares with complex use of enamels was also developed further during the Song period." Doesn't help much. "complex use of enamels" seems more like the Qing dynasty. Enamels usually means overglaze, which apparently did appear in about the Song period but does not seem to have been important then. Painting and pottery were mostly separate arts, without a lot of paining on pottery like the later dynasties or classical Greek pottery. Maybe something like: There was great emphasis on beautiful shapes and on glaze effects. Celadon that resembled jade, with thin body and thick translucent glaze, was developed for ceremonial palace use. I might find a good source later, but maybe someone else has one. There should be material in other Wikipedia articles to summarize, but I don't see that right now either.

paragaphs[edit]

Just my opinion, but I would suggest breaking some paragraphs. They're quite bulky.FourLights (talk) 07:19, 23 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
