Widely believed[edit]

"Formerly, this term was widely believed to refer to scaphism."

What the heck is that supposed to mean? It's one thing for a term formerly to refer to something. "Formerly . . . widely believed" makes it sound like the man on the street commonly confused it, in much the same manner as, oh, 'imply' and 'infer'. However, I have my doubts that the man on the street is sufficiently learned in the history of torture actively to concern himself with what 'cyphonism' does or may mean! 2601:589:4B00:C200:ACC1:AD9F:A286:49C7 (talk) 18:24, 18 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
