1. Well-written:
1a. the prose is clear, concise, and understandable to an appropriately broad audience; spelling and grammar are correct.

Lead

  • suggest He saw action during on the opening day... checkY
  • comma after Gallipoli Campaign checkY
  • see below re: moving the "only NZ VC at Gallipoli" mention up to first para checkY
  • suggest was the commander of signals in the Northern Military District. checkY
  • his service status before WWI, between the wars, and after WWII should be included. Didn't the name change over time, military reserve, territorial force etc? For the infobox, he appears to have started serving in 1909 (compulsory service?) and finished up in 1948. That, rather than his war service, should be reflected in the infobox. checkY

Early lifecheckY

First World War

  • suggest who was from a family with... checkY
  • add a comma after attempt to enlist checkY
  • ditto my comment about redlinking a company checkY
  • "signallers" rather than "signalers" throughout checkY
  • do we know what gallantry medal he was considered for in May 1915? checkY Not entirely sure, references are not very specific. It may have been a MiD so have changed "medal" to "award".
  • suggest linking NZ Inf Bde to New Zealand and Australian Division#Formation checkY
  • "battlefield" rather than "battle field" checkY
  • usual grammar is "brigade headquarters" rather than "brigade's headquarters" checkY
  • suggest Although he was not wounded, two bullets passed through the fabric of his tunic during the fighting. checkY
  • do we know who nominated him for the VC? checkY Have added this information.
  • suggest In June 1916, he rejoined his unit, by then on the Western Front in France as part of the New Zealand Division. checkY
  • "the following September" is a bit vague, consider specifying 1916. checkY
  • NZEF and NZEF is a bit repetitive, suggest dropping the second instance. checkY

Interwar periodcheckY

Second World War

  • I take it the Territorial Force had been renamed the Military Reserve by then? Would bear a little explanation for the casual reader. checkY Opted to rephrase slightly. The TF and National Military Reserve were two different organisations (trained TF personnel were moved to the reserve after a certain period of time).
  • link captain checkY
  • suggest was the commander of signals in the Northern Military District. checkY

Later life and legacy

  • "returned" is a bit repetitive, such varying the prose a bit, "resumed" perhaps checkY
  • suggest the link to North Shore Memorial Park be in the text rather than the caption checkY
  • "It just wasn't done" just needs scare quotes, not italics checkY
  • suggest until she studied Gallipoli during primary school. checkY
  • "lifetime member" or "life member" they mean different things usually, but maybe not in NZ checkY Lifetime member according to my references.
  • suggest In recognition of Bassett's rank at the time he won the VC, the Bassett Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the most outstanding corporal in the Corps of Signals. checkY
1b. it complies with the Manual of Style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation.
  • I'm not sure that the NZ Div Sig Coy would be notable, the redlink is not necessary checkY I concur, removed redlink.
  • suggest mentioning in the second sentence of the lead that his was the only NZ Gallipoli VC as well as the first NZ VC in WWI, this goes to his notability and should be mentioned as early as practical checkY rephrased; how does it read now?
2. Verifiable with no original research:
2a. it contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline.
  • suggest the citation for the VC be placed after the colon, rather than at the end, just looks neater checkY
2b. reliable sources are cited inline. All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose).
2c. it contains no original research.
3. Broad in its coverage:
3a. it addresses the main aspects of the topic.
3b. it stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style).
4. Neutral: it represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each.
5. Stable: it does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute.
6. Illustrated, if possible, by media such as images, video, or audio:
6a. media are tagged with their copyright statuses, and valid non-free use rationales are provided for non-free content.
  • the infobox pic licensing isn't clear. If it was migrated with permission, a link to the permission should be part of the licence. Same for the eleven VCs pic and the grave pic. checkY Have added a link to the Victoria Cross net permission to the description field for the infobox/grave images. The 11 VCs image didn't come from there. I opted to remove it as uncertain of copyright status anyway.
6b. media are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions.
  • suggest adding a caption to the infobox image checkY
  • the eleven VCs pic caption is very busy. Suggest you link to List of New Zealand Victoria Cross recipients, drop the names of the others and just identify Bassett's position. You might consider creating a NZ VCs navbox to place at the bottom of all NZ VC articles checkY Caption rephrased
