Nationality

[edit]

What is the nationality of Cyrus as a surname? Daniel Christensen (talk) 08:57, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest "Cyrus" should be a redirect to Cyrus the Great, with this page as a disambiguation. Move it? PatGallacher (talk) 17:45, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Or you could fix it and remove the claims. 76.66.197.30 (talk) 17:34, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

CyrusCyrus (disambiguation) — This would enable us to treat Cyrus the Great as the primary meaning, he is by some way the best-known Cyrus. PatGallacher (talk) 20:31, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think TJ Spyke may not have fully understood the proposal. I wasn't disputing that there are a number of people who could legitimately be described as Cyrus. I was simply proposing that Cyrus the Great should be treated as the primary meaning. This means that "Cyrus" should redirect to "Cyrus the Great", but this should have a hatnote pointing to "Cyrus (disambiguation)". He was surely the most important Cyrus, as his cognomen suggests, one of the most important figures in ancient history, the founder of the Persian Empire. PatGallacher (talk) 10:21, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. Rationale: this page, as it exists today, is already 95% a well-formatted (per WP guideline) disambiguation page. I think retitling the article Cyrus (disambiguation) will, 1), 'make the implicit, explicit', which is a good thing in any case. It will also then, 2), make it possible to have the Cyrus designation go to a particular and most well-known instance of Cyrus if that is what editors decide to do. But no. 2 is a separate event. No. 1 is a worthy clarification of WP in any event. N2e (talk) 11:05, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose there is no supporting evidence that "Cyrus the Great" is primary usage, and I highly doubt that he is primary usage. (In fact, I suspect Miley Cyrus is currently primary usage) 76.66.197.30 (talk) 16:34, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Miley Cyrus the primary meaning? This is presentism gone mad. Cyrus the Great is one of the most important figures in ancient history, the founder of the most important empire in the West prior to the Romans. Have you no sense of history? PatGallacher (talk) 17:07, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The top hit on Google is Miley Cyrus after eliminating Wikipedia. If you don't eliminate Wikipedia, but just ignore it, the top hit is Project Cyrus, an email application. Billy Ray Cyrus also gets high in the ranking. If you ignore Cyrus et fille, then the email application gets alot of hits on the first 100 Google results. So like I said, I doubt that "Cyrus the Great" is primary usage, so the dab page should remain. 76.66.197.30 (talk) 17:32, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In 100 years time Cyrus the Great will probably still be remembered as an important historical figure, but will Miley Cyrus and Project Cyrus be remembered? PatGallacher (talk) 21:18, 12 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Greek transliteration

[edit]

Kuros or Kyros? (the letter in question (υ) being an Ypsilon, so the classical transliteration should be Kyros, IINM) -- megA (talk) 17:04, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

meaning of cyrus

[edit]

in Latin language there is casing or ending for masculine nouns that is "us" ; there for the origin of the word could have been as "shiru" meaning lionly; I can compare it with the word dariush; that was a king in the same dynasty and it's persian spelling is "dara" means owner. amir arab — Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.157.144.74 (talk) 13:02, 1 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
