Nationality / demonym

[edit]

The sources in the article suggest that he was born in Romania and is at least of half-Hungarian descent. Different references call him "Hungarian", "half-Hungarian and half-Romanian", and "Romanian". Either way, Hungarian-Romanian is the most accurate demonym applicable. — MarkH21 (talk) 10:06, 24 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

MarkH21, this should not be an issue, since active players are identified by their FIFA nationality, that is for him is Hungarian. We handle such cases almost every month players having Hungarian/Romanian affiliation regarding birtplace, ethnicity, nationality, etc. As soon he would play for Romania at international level he would became a Romanian football player, or after he retired he could be described as "Hungarian-Romanian" if he would have a Romanian ethnicity, etc. What is sure, that he was born in Romania and he is a Hungarian citizen (we don't know more yet). Of course if a player with similar background became famous, there are editors who try to generate a battle over his affiliation, but we should professionally handle it.(KIENGIR (talk) 13:42, 24 September 2019 (UTC))[reply]
In what reliable source is his FIFA nationality identified as Hungarian / his citizenship identified as Hungarian? He hasn’t played internationally to demonstrate that. Since some sources mention him as half-Hungarian half-Romanian or just as Romanian, it suggests that he is a Hungarian-Romanian. — MarkH21 (talk) 17:50, 24 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
For instance, transfermarkt is a reliable to answer such questions. He holds undoubtedly Hungarian citizenship. Any international cap may just move the default designation if conflicts (however, i.e. Transfermarkt is reflecting the current FIFA nationality). We have to be careful with non-official sources (= no FIFA/UEFA/Transfermarkt and comparable), since those may easily mix superficially place of birth, citizenship, nationality or ethnicity. In case Romanian citizenship may be verified, then we may add to the category of Romanian footballers as well.(KIENGIR (talk) 21:24, 24 September 2019 (UTC))[reply]
@KIENGIR: Transfermarkt is not considered a reliable source by consensus (see also this related TfD). As of right now, there are no reliable sources that state his citizenship. — MarkH21 (talk) 21:30, 24 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@MarkH21:, too bad because Transfermartk is really reliable. However, I assured he holds both citizenships[1], so I will re-add the category I removed for now.(KIENGIR (talk) 21:39, 24 September 2019 (UTC))[reply]

The issue with Transfermarkt is that anyone can register and add/modify the nationality information. Thanks for the source - I've used for the article now. — MarkH21 (talk) 21:56, 24 September 2019 (UTC) [reply]
