"Wrestled Chinese control"

[edit]

The previous text says "wrestled Chinese control"; did that mean "wrested control of Vietnam away from China" or "wrestled with Chinese control"? The new text doesn't reflect either of these. Badagnani (talk) 00:58, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

During the time of the Khuc family, the Southern Han had other things to worry about, so Vietnamese administration was left more or less to the "natives". DHN (talk) 01:09, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Vietnamese patriot"

[edit]

The Battle of Bạch Đằng River (938) article calls him a "Vietnamese patriot." Is that correct? If he was born in the Jiaochi/Tonkin region, he wouldn't have been a native Chinese speaker, I assume. Badagnani (talk) 00:58, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It isn't clear whether to classify him as "Chinese" or "Vietnamese" is more appropriate. During this time, the ruling class in Vietnam primarily composed of transplanted Chinese who've been in the area for 5-6 generations and interbred with the natives, so they probably identify with Vietnam more than China. That is very fascinating. Do we have articles on this process? It seems very key to show the processes of nation and ethnicity building. Badagnani (talk) 01:22, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Keith Taylor's The Birth of Vietnam is a very good source on the origins of the Vietnamese nation. DHN (talk) 01:26, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
