Bold textIs this notable? Cmouse 15:57, 5 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

it sure is. SECProto 22:20, September 12, 2005 (UTC)

Does it damage the quality of the original DVD?

.... NO.
In fact, any quality loss is barely perceptible, even on a newer HDTV. The program is also capable of joining multiple discs into one, for instance, I have made each of the Lord of the Rings Extended Edition DVDs into a single dual-layer disc, as well as combining both volumes of Kill Bill onto one dual-layer disc, with very nice results. Chris 01:47, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Are you sure about that? I've never seen any version claiming to be able to do that. But yeah, for the most part the quality loss is impercpetible- although it's more noticable on older DVDs with low quality to begin with.

Why is there a reference to a version "3.2.0.16"? If this is true (highly unlikely), where can one find this version? If not, please fix it.

Legal Issues[edit]

The Wikipedia Foundation has servers in the United States, is it legal for us to directly link to download sites for software which violated DMCA? --Matthew 05:20, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure of the laws behind it, not being in the US myself. The owner's stie is not allowed to directly link to it. I personally don't think it's much of an issue- if we remove it, people looking for it will just google it. It's not as though it would impede any attempts to find it.

Legal Status - Situation in Germany[edit]

The article currently states, that DVD Shrink is illegal in Germany because it circumvents a copy protection mechanism. This is not entirely accurate.

In Germany, you may not distribute software (neither free nor paid) that allows the circumvention of copy protection mechanisms. This is why you won't find a DVD Shrink download from german internet servers.

However, in the same way you may copy material for your own, private and non-commercial use, you may also utilize a program like DVD Shrink to circumvent the copy protection mechanism for the purpose of creating such a private, non-commercial copy.

You may go here to verify this information:

Gesetze im Internet - UrhG - §108b [DE]

(German) Code of law on the Internet - UrhG - $108b [EN (Google translated - ugly!)]

--M.Söntges (talk) 01:19, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There's a de-CSS version that should be legal in germany as the mechanism to remove/work-around copy protection had been removed. This version is also offered on german servers. Regarding the legal situation - sadly circumventing copy protection to create a private copy is not permitted by law. --Denniss (talk)
Yes it is permitted in Germany - did you follow the link I posted above? There is clearly an exception for private, non-commercial use to the prohibition of breaking copy protection mechanisms. Before stating otherwise again, please provide proof (as I did), because only facts can count here. --M.Söntges (talk) 17:32, 9 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dedicated ripping tools[edit]

"Copy protection algorithms, such as Sony's ArcCos, which have bad CRCs in unused sectors, require a dedicated ripping tool. The freeware DVDFab Decrypter [3] does a very good job at this."

That sounds like a guide for users wanting to rip DVDs. Regardless, an encylcopedia shouldn't say "xxx does a very good job" since that is more of opinion, rather than fact. If it was backed up be research that proved DVDFab was "good", then that could be said, but perhaps DVDFab is actually poor, but the writer hasn't seen anything better. That sentence looks like a plug.

Whatever, I think that line needs changing.. Perhaps "Dedicated ripping tools are used..." perhaps?

Agreed. The section is question has been removed, although now no metion is made of dedicated ripping tools. I do not see the need for such a section in this article on DVD Shrink. —Stimpy 11:47, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. Often when a product is described on Wikipedia, other similar products are listed. Such products should be listed in the "See also" section. 68.145.230.191 (talk) 22:32, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

External Links[edit]

The "Easy tutorial to copy Dvds..." is not very easy to understand. In fact, the enlish is extremely poor. I'd guess it's a automated translation. Anyhow, it's a poor tutorial. 212.181.143.229 21:45, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rubbish[edit]

This is rubbish "Ultimately, as dual-layer DVD-R DL & DVD+R DL media become more affordable, transcoding tools such as DVD Shrink could become obsolete." Even when when DVD R DL becomes more common DVD shrink would still have a many uses such as shrinking HD DVDs to fit on a Dual layer DVD r and I use it to rip dvd files for my creative zen vission m. -Dr.

All I can say to this is...Lurk Moar. Tazz (talk) 04:33, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

These are nothing to do with DVD Shrink. They are soundalike rip-offs, not authorized by the author of DVD Shrink. I have restored the "Fake Versions" section, how long before the perpetrators of these scams vandalize it again remains to be seen. However I will continue to revert it.Ultramince (talk) 04:50, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fake versions[edit]

I removed this unsourced paragraph. Another editor then went & restored this unsourced paragraph while making no attempt to source it. We can include sourced material in wikipedia articles but any challenged unsourced material must ALWAYS be removed and never returned except of course with a source. Thanks, ♫ SqueakBox talk contribs 15:43, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No, that's not an accurate statement of Wikipedia policy. Under normal circumstances, the challenging editor (you) would add a {{fact}} template to the text to indicate that it should be sourced. Exceptions are controversial statements in WP:BLP articles (not applicable here), and statements which are obviously false.
From WP:V:

Any material lacking a reliable source directly supporting it may be removed, but how quickly this should happen depends on the material and the overall state of the article. Editors might object if you remove material without giving them time to provide references. It has always been good practice to make reasonable efforts to find sources oneself that support such material, and cite them.

The idea that there are packagers trying to make money from free software seems highly plausible to me, maybe you should wait a little before deleting. Thundermaker (talk) 15:57, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
We do not include material based on plausibility, we use verification. There is absolutely no compulsion to put a fact tag on unsourced info, it is something an editor may do if they feel it is appropriate but to leap from there to "I can include unsourced material and all you can do is fact tag it" is utter rubbish. Either source the material or get rid of it, these are your 2 choices. Thanks, ♫ SqueakBox talk contribs 13:47, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Freeware[edit]

Freeware needs sourcing, I have tried but all i get is downloads claiming it is freeware where what we need is a reliable third party secondary source. Thanks, ♫ SqueakBox talk contribs 16:15, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Official site[edit]

As refs go its marginal at best and of course no indication in the pc article that this is the official site, and given this is disputed that is what we need. A google search reveals that at least 2 sites are claiming to be the official one. We need to sort this issue as its absolutely essential that if there are several who claim to be the official that we in wikipedia do not choose one & say it is the "only" official site. Thanks, ♫ SqueakBox talk contribs 17:10, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why is an article in PC Magazine "marginal at best"? — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 17:25, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
pc mag aren't marginal per se, absolutely not, its the lack of info in this particular article to support the ref which makes this ref marginal. We need a third party source to confirm this is the official site and this ref does not do that, it merely makes a connection. And the problem is that more than one site claims to be the official one. WP:NPOV is at play here so its important. Thanks, ♫ SqueakBox talk contribs 17:27, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The review includes a link to the DVD Shrink site. It doesn't use the word "official", but I don't think I've ever seen a review that does. Wait, here's a review that uses the word "official", but I don't know if Bitwise Magazine is an RS. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 17:38, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Have you ever tried to visit the forum? There are clear statements ragarding the legal status of this program. See here and here --Denniss (talk) 18:04, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the links. As soon as time permits I'll investigate these as well as the issue generally; we must be neutral in how we deal with this obviously somewhat complex subject, and I wont edit the article again on this point until I have some sound information. Thanks, ♫ SqueakBox talk contribs 18:37, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Here's an article from PC World that doesn't use the word "official" but says "You can download DVD Shrink from the company's Web site." Is that sufficient? — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 18:29, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Shame the pc mags link is to a 404 but yes it is to the site and that is an okay ref in a way the other one simply wasnt. Thanks, ♫ SqueakBox talk contribs 18:41, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. I'm not getting a 404 error. In any event, the article was reprinted in The Washington Post. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 18:45, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The 404 is to the link on the pc magazine page, http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html, but it is the same site which is certainly working. Thanks, ♫ SqueakBox talk contribs 18:54, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have again removed the external link (WP:SPAM). Regardless of what the site might have been in the past when referred to by reputable sources, it is now misleading at best. It purposely leads you around to get as many page hits as possible. After clicking through several pages I did not find a single link to download the program, in fact, quite the opposite: many prominent links to other download sites and unrelated software. — Deon Steyn (talk) 05:29, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please read the site again: They had to remove the download or face legal threats. There are instruction how to get a valid version from mirror sites. Soem simple click lead you to the forum with instructions how to get the software via google search or similar.[1] --Denniss (talk) 13:12, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Removed the download? go to http://www.dvdshrink.org/much_en.php and click on the version number next to "Current stable version:", the link I get is this which goes to a valid download... which I have now installed to my pc, by the way --Walkman (talk) 00:53, 11 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what this is but this file is not the original dvdshrink version, the original setup file has a different name and a size just above 1 MB. --Denniss (talk) 07:58, 11 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes you are correct, it is not the original installer, but a downloader for it, it asks if you want to install other junk (note there is a decline button) then downloads the installer.--Walkman (talk) 13:56, 11 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Rip off[edit]

How is this ripping off the original? I strongly disagree. Can you please explain why you think this is so. OrangePotassium (talk) 22:11, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Read the discussions above, plenty of information about these fakes available. --Denniss (talk) 22:33, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The dvd shrink 3.2 version has been removed from the web because it didn't comply with music trademark rules and the dvd shrink 2010 version is made by a company that has bought and registered the dvd shrink trademark in US and developed the product in a legal way without making the product work with original DVDs that you buy in the shop. Plus, this software has been developed to be compatible with windows 7 and windows vista computers, the old version was only working for windows xp computer, so the dvd shrink 2010 version is the evolution of dvd shrink made by a different company. And of course they charge money because they provide technical support and constant improvements and upgrades to the product; making money is not of itself a bad thing and favoritizing free products over paid for products is against wikipedia rules such as NPOV which require neutrality, no?.

In the dvd shrink 2010 site httx://www.official-dvdshrink.ork the payment process is very clear, there are no hidden fees, in order to get the product you need to pay before as every software does. Rip off would have been if in this site they were selling you the dvd shrink 3.2 version that it's free , but here is not the case! OrangePotassium (talk) 15:23, 15 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What's the source for this claim ? In any way, this "new" software is not related to the software in this article despite having a similar name. --Denniss (talk) 15:38, 15 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

DVD Shrink seems to be a scam at all since all links lead to some kind of malware. Can any please post a link where a real working version of this programm without any toolbars or other crap can be found!! 82.82.162.170 (talk) 20:33, 15 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

DVD Shrink is nothing you claim to be, these fake ones claiming to be official DVD Shrink are often scams or even dangerous. There's no download from the official site for legal reasons. --Denniss (talk) 07:22, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Compatibility with Windows Vista and 7[edit]

I am not an expert, but I do know that DVD Shrink works fine on my 32 bit Windows 7 system. I have rewritten the section on Compatibility with Windows Vista and 7 so that it now indicates that there MAY be compatibility issues. ---Dagme (talk) 11:01, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Never had an issue using DVD Shrink. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.205.179.220 (talk) 20:58, 15 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
