Plagiarism section

[edit]

This section states "after condemns plagiarism against Jorge Ben, Rod Stewart has agreed to donate all royalties from his album to the United Nations Children's Fund." Aside from the non-sensical writing, the source cited says Ben "won a lawsuit against Stewart for lifting his song" and that Stewart "agreed to donate proceeds from sales of his single to UNICEF." This is inaccurate. Stewart did not donate the royalties from this song to UNICEF as the result of any lawsuit. The Music for UNICEF project was started in May 1978 with the Bee Gees being the first artist to donate a song to the cause (see [1]). In November 1978 the other artists enlisted to donate songs, including Rod Stewart, were announced (see [2]). The claim of plagiarism was not raised by Jorge Ben until after the song became a hit in early 1979, as documented in this Los Angeles Times article dated April 8, 1979. The article states that no lawsuit had been filed and points out that the case would be complicated by the fact that Stewart had already donated the song's royalties to UNICEF. Stewart's manager is also quoted saying "it's ironic that a Brazilian artist is making this claim when most of the money will go to countries like Brazil to help underprivileged children." Credit to Bobby Womack

[edit]

As cited this song was subject to a plagiarism dispute with Jorge Ben acquiring prior authorship for the melody. However the distinctive bass riff is a direct copy from Bobby Womack's 'If You Want My Love, Put Something Down On It' recorded in 1974. Stewart has acknowledged this to be the case. There are references that can be cited to support this fact. However any attempt to include the information is thwarted by some users. I'd be interested to hear from them as to why they keep deleting the information? dorkinglad (talk)

References need reformatting (reflist)

[edit]

I was viewing the article on my phone I couldn't figure out why I kept getting the article again when I would tap the reference numbers. I finally realized it must be that they're not formatted so that each number from among the many, many references takes the reader directly to the reference in question. What with being on my phone at the moment, I couldn't possibly do the reformatting now. Posting this here in hopes someone else will come along who has the time and the right equipment handy.
