Factual errors[edit]

James B. Priestly wrote a play titled Dangerous Corner, which had been performed early in 1934

Despite carrying three cites, this statement needs correcting. The play (his first) was performed in England in May 1932 (though the 1934 date might refer to its first performance in America). His correct name was John Boynton Priestley (with an 'e'), always known as J.B. Priestley. The lede states that the film was 'based on a novel and play of the same name'. There was never a novel version, though Priestley was chiefly known as a novelist at the time - just the play mentioned earlier. Incidentally, the play had been discreetly based on a gay theme, clearly written-out of the film plot. Valetude (talk) 20:42, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Valetude, do you have citations for any of that? Onel5969 TT me 23:11, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Re his correct name and spelling of surname, his own wiki-page would confirm these - also that the list of his novels does not show anything with this title.
There is a dedicated wiki-page ‘J. B. Priestley's Time Plays’ which confirms the date of 1932 for the first performance (supported by his own commentary in his 1962 literary reminiscences ‘Margin Released’ P.194ff. - sorry, no ISBN).
Re the gay element, the wiki page for the original play says: ‘Produced shortly after strict enforcement of the Hays Code had begun, the Hollywood version removed some of the most controversial elements of the play, including the homosexual relationship between Gordon and Martin…’
I know that these do not strictly classify as citations, as such. But I think they can be taken as confirmed reports in a non-controversial context where there is no incentive to falsify. Valetude (talk) 23:42, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Valetude, interesting, but they do not pass WP:VERIFY, except perhaps for the first one, which while primary, could be used. Onel5969 TT me 03:18, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Then the existing cites might need examining. Something is wrong with the system if inaccurate claims take precedence over correct statements that are not supported in the technically correct way. Valetude (talk) 06:55, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Valetude, I did re-check the existing citations. That's why I asked if you had any, to compare. Absent sourcing, cited material stands. Onel5969 TT me 13:38, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Re Dangerous Corner: the film was based on a novel and play of the same name. This accurately describes The Good Companions, but not Dangerous Corner. Valetude (talk) 18:54, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
