Gallery[edit]

This image guideline suggests that "In general, galleries are discouraged in main article namespace; historically, such galleries are more often deleted than kept". Read with WP:IMAGE#Pertinence and encyclopedic nature and WP:TOPIC, should the addition be reverted? -- Old Moonraker (talk) 13:01, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This edit requests "don't revert without a reason" and refers to the images of the buildings assembled into a gallery. Although the guideline itself seems to be a reason, my point above was made before this addition and refers to the off topic collection of student and staff pictures: the WP:TOPIC guidelines are closely drawn. My point was that a gallery is preferable to a collection of five badly layouted images that are just thrown together. It would be even better if the article only included one or two photos and the other were linked to via Wikimedia Commons. PS: I am a regular contributer. — Richie 23:49, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The much needed tidy-up by User:Richie was to the images of the buildings. The only galleries on the page when I wrote the above were of people. Still going with the WP:TOPIC guidelines, these are the ones that I would like to put into a gallery in Commons. Image copyright problem with File:BrianGibson1.jpg[edit]

The image File:BrianGibson1.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

Jane Goodall[edit]

It seems to be frequently thought that Jane Goodall was a student at Darwin - possibly confusion arising from the fact that Dian Fossey was indeed there. Goodall's PhD was done while a student at Newnham. I have added a note citing her Ph.D. thesis, the title page of which states 'by Jane van Lawick-Goodall of Newnham College'. It does seem slightly odd to have to explicitly cite a ref for why someone should be excluded from a list, but the edit keeps getting reverted so maybe it deserves inclusion as a common misconception. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.111.184.21 (talk) 16:31, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, given the lack of good online sources (and that most of the ones that exist tend towards Darwin), it's probably useful to note as common misconception & add the ref (although I agree it seems odd). One of the pages I looked at suggested she started at Darwin but completed at Newnham, I've no idea if that's the case, but it might explain the confusion and would also be noteworthy. Given that Darwin College was only established in 1964, and her PhD was submitted in 1965, that seems most unlikely. I was looking through various sites, and found this, which is associated with the University. The text says: "On the recommendation of Louis S. B Leakey she was admitted to a PhD programme which she undertook as a fellow of Darwin College, later becoming associated with Newnham College, Cambridge.". This would suggest that she was in both Darwin and Newnham, and if that is the case, I don't see why shee would not be considered a Darwin alumna. I think I included that link in my edit, but it it's not clear what the source of the information is (while the thesis submission sourcing is clear enough) and it's on the The Student-Run Computing Facility - so it isn't an official website in any way.
