Work Needed[edit]

This article needs some work. I am not in a position to do it myself at the moment (I know enought to see the problems but not to correct them...). Firstly the structure is poor - it needs dividing up into sections. Secondly Data Assimilation is not only used in weather forecasting other fields used it first and continue to use it. Finally I think there are some errors in the article as well. In my very limited understanding the main division in techniques is not really 3D versus 4D but sequential assimilation (where the model uses the pieces of data one at a time in temporal order) versus variation data assimiation (in which all the observtions of one period - e.g. 6 hours - are used in one go to minimise an error function). --NHSavage 09:59, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have done what I can for this article but I think it needs to have a more general introduction on Data Assimilation theory, techniques and history before focussing on NWP. If this leads to the article getting too big we could later create a page like Data Assimilation in Meteorology for the NWP related stuff (and perhaps chemical data assim.).--NHSavage 10:39, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe we could also link to the data that is being assimilated. One possible way is through a link to Atmospheric Observational Databases and an enhancement of that article to include more meteorological data. Mkfwd 03:33, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The article has citations in the text but the corresponding references at the end are missing. Instead they reference something else. Jmath666 05:53, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A thing that surprised me after reading this article (myself being from the engineering field) is the lack of connections to methods in signal processing and optimal estimation/control fields that were doing exactly the same. There is a need in my opinion of connections to the broad corpus of literature on optimal filtering, stochastical nonlinear filtering, Bayesian filtering etc.

Can someone add definitions for symbols in the cost function section? Almost none of the are defined.128.174.75.191 (talk) 20:22, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Work definitely needed[edit]

Put yourself in the position of someone who doesn't know the subject at all. Even of someone with, say, first year university science. On a scale of 0-10, how well does this article describe the topic to such a person? (Hint: the answer is not towards the 10 end of the scale.) Good quality teaching and geek-level brain-dumping are two different, almost opposite, concepts. Sadly, this article, as it currently stands, does not teach the subject at all. How might we begin to address this? Feline Hymnic (talk) 00:32, 19 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Feline Hymnic. There is no point in writing an encyclopedia THAT IS ONLY UNDERSTANDABLE IF YOU ALREADY UNDERSTAND IT. It seems like wiki is going more and more in this direction, at least in some aspects. 67.183.6.85 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 03:35, 20 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Some effort has been made to try to include information already within the numerical weather prediction and history of numerical weather prediction articles to explain the point of data assimilation. Honestly, much of this escapes me as well. The text preceding this round of edits is laborious and requires a lot of extra information not included within this article. Ayup, this one needs some work[edit]

I'll be working a little on readability. Thinking of just throwing the thesaurus at it, and opting to simplify wherever possible without altering the actual content. ^-^ Atomic putty? Rien! 20:21, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
