Electronics engineer or video blogger?[edit]

Shouldn't the title of this article be "Dave L. Jones (video blogger)"? That is is full time occupation. While he may have been an EE in the past and now as a side hobby/business, he is primarily known for his video blogging. ゼーロ (talk) 11:47, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. --Ronz (talk) 18:08, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
He's a video blogger focusing very narrowly on EE issues. I sure wish the move to "... (electronics engineer)" had been discussed, then maybe this idea would have come up then and we could have avoided yet another move within a month? In any case, there has been no objection in over a year to use of the "Infobox YouTube personality" template, so this move would be consistent with that, and might actually survive two months... If we do it, could I perform the actual move, so we don't have an archive mess to clean up later? Jeh (talk) 09:10, 21 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've invited the person who did the previous move to discuss here; s/he might have an idea to kick in. Jeh (talk) 09:56, 21 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the name of the page "David L. Jones" to "David L. Jones (electronics engineer", only so I could create the page "David L. Jones" (botanist). I am relaxed about what the first "David L. Jones" (electronics engineer/video blogger/?) page is called - although it would be great if a search for "David L. Jones" returned a page listing both of them. (Hope that makes sense!) Gderrin (talk) 12:15, 21 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You mean a disambiguation page. See WP:DAB. I'm not familiar with the botanist. If we think neither person should be considered a "primary topic" for "David L. Jones" then we can create a DAB page (it will just be a much shorter version of the one that's now at David Jones) and there will be at least a slight hope that some well-meaning busybody won't come along and revert it citing WP:TWODABS. Jeh (talk) 20:42, 21 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that Jeh (talk · contribs) - the botanist Jones is notable, having formally described many species of plants and he is also the author of many books about others. (Of the 80 species of Caladenia I've started so far, he is either the author or the author of synonyms of that species, and there are several hundred more to be written.) He is also the naming author of many other species of orchids and of other plant genera. This[1] and this[2] might help. ("Probably the most prolific horticultural botanist author that Australia has produced.") I think the botanist is the "primary topic" but accept others may not agree.
Thanks for your work on this. I do apologise if I have created unnecessary work by not discussing my change first. Gderrin (talk) 22:18, 21 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's no great amount of work. Just, next time you move a page, please be sure to get any talk archive pages, and fix the archiver template. It's worth checking the "page information" for any other subpages, too.
Re the move itself, my personal opinion is that moving a page can be a big deal; it should nearly always be discussed first (unless it is mandated by some policy). Heck, even if it is mandated, input should be solicited re the new name. But that's just me. My rationale for this opinion is that those who are watching the talk page may have been concerned with the page for some time and so might have some opinions worth listening to about what the new name should be, or if it should be moved at all, and reverting a move is sometimes not trivial. But official WP policy is that a page move is only slightly more deserving of concern than any other edit (inasmuch as anon editors aren't allowed to move pages). Jeh (talk) 02:43, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If no-one objects then in a few days I'll move to "David L. Jones (video blogger)". ゼーロ (talk) 09:12, 23 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

No objections from me (unsurprisingly). Thanks for your work. Gderrin (talk) 09:33, 23 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Beg pardon, ゼーロ... but given that you contributed to the archive mess before, I'd prefer to do it. Jeh (talk) 13:50, 23 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that was uncalled for. In any case, if you want to do it, please go ahead. ゼーロ (talk) 10:22, 24 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Jeh, are you going to do this? ゼーロ (talk) 11:38, 31 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I wanted to give the discussion a solid week. I'm going to do it as an RM though so a page mover can do it and be sure to get all the archives in one step. Jeh (talk) 11:54, 31 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks. ゼーロ (talk) 13:17, 31 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Requested. Jeh (talk) 10:34, 1 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Jeh. ゼーロ (talk) 12:51, 3 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dave still is both, he designs and sells products like his multimeter(s), µCurrent, coming up the µSupply

For what it is worth, he describes himself thusly:
"The EEVblog is hosted by David L. Jones, an electronics design engineer based in Sydney Australia. In each episode he shares some of his 25+ years experience in the electronics design industry in his unique non-scripted naturally enthusiastic and passionate style.... Dave was the first https://www.eevblog.com/radioshow/ to become a full time Youtuber back in April 2011. It remains his full time job – entertaining and educating a vast Youtube engineering audience."[1]
We don't let the way people describe themselves be the think that determines what we call them, but it is a factor.
Dave is also a well known text blogger, ( https://www.eevblog.com/blog/ ), podcaster ( https://www.eevblog.com/radioshow/ ) runs a wiki ( https://www.eevblog.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page ) and manufactures and sells things that he has designed ( https://www.eevblog.com/store/ ) I would like the page title to not actually exclude any of those, as the current title does.
Might I suggest David L. Jones (engineering blogger)? --Guy Macon (talk) 12:00, 25 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I like it. Jeh (talk) 15:41, 25 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Archiving needs consolidation[edit]

I've never looked into how auto-page-archiving works, but we now have two separate archives: Talk:David_L._Jones_(electronics_engineer)/Archive_1 and Talk:David_L._Jones/Archive_2 --Ronz (talk) 18:09, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I think I can fix this easily. We'll see. Jeh (talk) 23:17, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Damnit, I can't do the last move I need to do (of three total) because of the redirect created by the first one. I can either just copy the old archive page on top of the new redirect or request an admin do the move. The latter is much better as it preserves edit history but may take a little while. Jeh (talk) 23:25, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I have created the request. Of course we'll have to go through this again if the page gets moved to "... (Video blogger)". Jeh (talk) 23:32, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And in the meantime I changed the redirect to archive 1 so it points to the old archive 1. So if you click on the links in the archive index box, they work. Don't think the search will work until archive 1 is moved to the correct place. Hm... I better check on that search, and on the archiving setup. Jeh (talk) 00:15, 20 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Admin Dane (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) took care of the last move. It's all done. If we move the page yet again, to "...(video blogger)", we'll have to remember to get this right. Jeh (talk) 05:01, 20 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Just wanted to clarify, I am not an administrator, I am a page mover. -- Dane talk 05:13, 20 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. Thanks. I didn't realize that was a separate designation. Jeh (talk) 05:25, 20 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

David L. Jones (video blogger)EEVblog – He is mostly known by the name of his blog, the blog is also the primary subject of this article. It's comparable to the article about Lazy Game Reviews. Using the blog title removes the need for a disambiguation as well. PhotographyEdits (talk) 08:48, 6 May 2024 (UTC) — Relisting. Safari ScribeEdits! Talk! 06:08, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose. This article is about the biography of a living person. Renaming it to the name of the blog does not make any sense, as it will not only rename but also completely change the type of the article. A b r v a g l (PingMe) 20:09, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
