Alvin Ailey

[edit]

I'm a little uncertain how to proceed - except to remember to put the four tildes at the end.

I am the subject of the paragraphs on David McReynolds and, of course, like all very minor figures in Aemerican history am delighted to find there is even a single line devoted to me.

But . . . originally the reference to Alvin Ailey was that I was his long time lover and this was amended after I wrote. However as the wording stands now it implies a relationship I didn't have with Alvin. Did I know him? Yes, very well. Did we make out once or twice, yes. I am certainly enormously grateful to Alvin for letting me into the world of Kenneth Patchen, e. e. cummings, and William Carlos Williams, when we were both students at UCLA. And yes, I was delighted to visit him at the Lestor Horton Dance Theatre.

All a big part of my life - he was black, I was white, he was gay, and I wasn't sure, until Alvin, that I was.

But Alvin Ailey is a major figure in American Dance, he had, I am sure, many close friends, and I feel as if my having known Alvin (along with having known many others who had a deep impact on my life, such as Allen Ginsberg) is given more weight than it merits, almost as if I was drawing on Alvin's fame.

Sincerely, David McReynolds 66.108.116.111 03:24, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • As you might be the person in the article or someone who is claiming to be the subject of the article I can not tell for sure. BUT..according to books Ailey's longtime lover was David McReynolds. So unless you actually give an interview and have that interview published stating that you were never his lover, then the printed books have more weight then retraction here. Edit away, David

[edit]

You're the best one to edit your own life story (and don't worry, someone will tell you if you get too self lauditory).

I for one would like to see your additions to and edits of the article! T L Miles 21:25, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, in general autobiographical editing (and other potential conflicts of interest) are discouraged due to concerns over verifiability and neutrality. It's recommended that in such situations material be placed on the article's talk page, to be incorporated (or not) by a more neutral third party. This isn't official policy and it isn't set in stone, but I think it's a decent guideline. Check out WP:AUTO and WP:COI for more information and recommendations. -David Schaich Talk/Cont 03:07, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image needs replacement

[edit]

Hello all...

An image used in the article, specifically Image:David mcreynolds.jpeg, has a little bit of a licensing issue. The image was uploaded back when the rules around image uploading were less restrictive. It is presumed that the uploader was willing to license the picture under the GFDL license but was not clear in that regard. As such, the image, while not at risk of deletion, is likely not clearly licensed to allow for free use in any future use of this article. If anyone has an image that can replace this, or can go take one and upload it, it would be best.

Alvin Ailey again

[edit]

Four years ago, the subject of the article asked here about the incorrect statement concerning Alvin Ailey. The answer, above, is technically correct. A week ago the issue was raised again on the Help Desk; I gave a reply that was again technically correct but, as I remarked there, not very helpful. The question was moved to an archive without any further comments.

I have removed the statement. This is contrary to the letter of WP:BLP, which only permits the removal of unsourced material. So for this one I am invoking the spirit of WP:BLP, and perhaps this rule or this one.

By all means put it back, but first ask yourself, "To what extent does this information improve the encyclopedia?" -- John of Reading (talk) 09:21, 3 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

NPoV Violation

[edit]

WP:NPOV demands that we avoid stating opinions as facts and avoid stating seriously contested assertions as facts, and indicates a preference for nonjudgmental language. Whether or not McReynolds's comments actually were racist has been heavily disputed among members of the SPUSA, so vigorously that a number of members actually left the party in reaction to what they perceived as a fallacious hit job against McReynolds, and even the party's female co-chair has asserted that what McReynolds said wasn't actually racist. By saying, point blank, that McReynolds's comments were racist, this article is stating an opinion as fact, it is stating a seriously contested assertion as fact, and it is stating so in the most judgmental language possible.

Would it not be more acceptable, in keeping with WP:NPOV, to say the following instead?

In January 2015, the Socialist Party USA's National Committee voted to censure McReynolds over comments made on social media regarding the Charlie Hebdo shooting and Shooting of Michael Brown, which a majority of the committee perceived as being racist. McReynolds resigned from the SPUSA shortly thereafter.
