Rave reviews for Fraser's second film —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.76.199.34 (talk) 14:47, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly enough references over, so here: A further review, rating the movie highly on script and ensemble- and O'Toole- acting

And Oscar mentions:

Citations needed[edit]

Citation needed for following : (Under "Plot")

  • The screen story has been summarised [by whom?] as "a surreal period comedic tale of canine reincarnation exploring the relationships between father and son and master and dog".
  • Peter O'Toole quotes also uncited.

Under "Storyline"

  • "All the cast play their roles with dignity and respect to the period." (This is an opinion, therefore is neither encyclopedic in tone nor verifiable. Probably should just be cut, but I don't want to step on toes too much.)

Two problems under "Plot"[edit]

1. Original novella info: added details & changed "modified somewhat" to "adapted" as the differences between the novella & the screenplay are, in fact, major. 2. I'm going to edit out the following (uncited) Peter O'Toole quote below to reflect the facts that

  • Alan Sharp (not Lord Dunsany) is the creator of the father character, and
  • the novella is not "about a father and son who are separated...." (as there was no father/son relationship in the novella at all).

(Presumably O'Toole was mistaken - understandably - about exactly who wrote what, though there is no citation so I can't make sure the quote is accurate.)

  • quote in question:"Dunsany took the whole notion of the transmigration of souls, a foundation of belief for billions of people, and made it into a comical whimsy about a father and son who are separated by the inability of the father to accept the tragic loss of his other son and his wife"
