Football players lost at sea[edit]

If you mean Sonny Fai, he has been added to this page many times, but is always removed in the absence of proof of death. WWGB (talk) 08:50, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It has been positively confirmed that they were on the boat when it overturned. It's been reported that the 3 lost men removed their life jackets. They recovered the boat, and it it's been over 96 hours since it capsized. There is zero chance they are still alive out there. How is this any different from notable plane crash victims who are listed before their bodies are positively identified? They are talking about Marquis Cooper and Corey Smith. While its reasonable to assume they are now deceased, until their bodies are found, all that can technically be done is say they are missing. On the other hand, they could be declared legally dead at some point in the future. (I think Steve Fossett was legally dead before they found him.) Natasha Richardson[edit]

There are multiple conflicting reports on the situation, but the BBC are consistently reporting (for example 5 minutes ago) that she is not dead. Kevin Mosley[edit]

Someone please explain how Mr. Mosley's death is notable. While sad, as all premature deaths are, he was only a pilot for Fed-Ex, one of thousands, and had no previous notable achievements or newsworthy presence. Furthermore, the co-pilot (Anthony Stephen-Pino) was not included, but it should be understood his circumstances are the same. Derek Benfield[edit]

The ref supporting Derek Benfield is a newspaper death announcement (not a story or obit produced by the newspaper's editorial staff). Is this really a reliable source? 87.114.147.43 (talk) 20:59, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Newspapers are generally very careful about such announcements, as are we, and usually require some evidence such as a death certificate. On that basis, I'd say it's OK. --Rodhullandemu 21:16, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The Telegraph's page on how to place an announcement only says they confirm by phone. The Guardian says the same (PDF). There's no evidence that they demand a death certificate, just 20 quid on someone's credit card and a callback. In this specific case there's no reason to doubt Derek Benfield's announcement, but as this mechanism has been used in the past for trollish and comic effect, Wikipedia runs the risk of being manipulated by this mechanism. 87.114.147.43 (talk) 21:43, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There must be a level of trust somewhere along the line, and we rely on the accuracy of the sources we cite since we cannot check beyond them. The Telegraph has a reputation generally for accuracy, and false reports must be very rare (See, for example, Premature obituaries). I'm not talking about obituaries, which are prepared by journalists. I'm talking about classified advertisments, which are submitted by paying advertisers. Above you say "usually require some evidence such as a death certificate" - can I ask you to provide a source that supports that claim? Failing that, these ads are no more a reliable source than is a classified ad for Arthur Daley motors. My experience dealing with deaths in the family is that death announcements are printed quickly so that friends will know to attend the funeral. Death certificates are often not available fast enough to meet this need. The announcements are often placed through a funeral home, so in those cases the newspaper is dealing with someone they know. --Jc3s5h (talk) 22:54, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

23/03/09 This death is ridiculously recorded; apparently Tonda the sumatran orangutan was 50 and died in captivity in america. Please remove this death of an animal. His page says he died today, however this recent deaths article says the 28th. Decisions?

New month[edit]

The majority opinion at "Talk:Deaths in 2009#Don't remove a month before it's over" was to leave the old month in place until seven days of the new month have elapsed. Several reversions have occurred regarding the inclusion (or not) of Sandra Cantu, linked to Sandra Cantu homicide. As implied in this page move [2], it is the event that is notable and not the poor unfortunate child.
