Hey folks. Since this is an energy-page, how about we talk about environmental impacts of proper and improper use and disposal of these things? I came across this as I was reading up on Earthships, I may come back when I feel like learning about batteries, but if someone knows stuff ahead of me please contribute. Converting[edit]

Is is possible to convert a regular car battery to a deep-cycle battery (for price issues) ? - anon

No. Different internal construction, thicker plates. --Wtshymanski (talk) 18:32, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Depth of discharge[edit]

I would like to know more about the level of discharge - i.e. discharged to 30%, 50%, 100% of its capacity ? What is a common/normal ? To what voltage does it drop, in comparison with a normal battery?

the answer is always "It depends". Depth of discharge depends on the application. The terminal voltage of a lead-acid battery is not strongly correlated to its state of charge, so it's usual to measure the electrolyte specific gravity to accurately assess the state of charge. --Wtshymanski (talk) 18:32, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Depth of Discharge, or DOD, is the common way the industry refers to your question. Depending on the manufacturer of the battery, they will recommend you never discharge over 50% or 80% of the battery for maximum life cycles. Check the label, or manufacturer's website of your battery. For Lifeline batteries, the graph of average DOD vs number of charge/discharge cycles is here. Can a deep cycle and a car battery be used at the same time to extend run time?[edit]

Can they be connected in parallel for different applications or do they need to be isolated? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.248.230.182 (talk) 16:33, 8 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

SURE! A battery is a power tank, optimized for speed (cranking battery) or distance (deep cycle battery). Each has an ampere hour capacity (AH rating), and the combined total across both types of batteries would be the amount of power you can use. 100ah deep cycle battery + 60ah starting battery = 160ah total battery bank. Caveats: 1 Be sure to disconnect the two batteries before you recharge them though. 2 Recharging differing size batteries, in one bank, inevitably leads to overcharging the small battery, and under charging the larger one. 3 You will reduce the lifespan of your starting battery when you discharge it too far (past 20%). 4 As your batteries are drained, the starting battery will give all it's power first. Then the deep cycle battery will discharge fully (Due to internal resistance). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.77.126.188 (talk) 08:01, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why does this article say that its a lead-acid specifically?[edit]

Reading the sources I don't see why the first sentence in the article is "A deep-cycle battery is a lead-acid battery designed to be regularly deeply discharged using most of its capacity." From what I'm reading it has nothing to do with the fact that it is lead acid and more to do with its ability to be drained almost completely. Shouldn't lead-acid be omitted from a lot of these paragraphs? I plan on removing the specification that deep cycle batteries are lead acid batteries specifically unless someone tells me otherwise.Learncraft (talk) 01:19, 13 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Because only lead-acid batteries are usually described as "deep cycle" ? Batteries with other chemistries aren't called by this name even if they are optimized for high discharge. --Wtshymanski (talk) 16:21, 13 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Addressed, but probably best to keep the main focus here on lead-acid. - Snori (talk) 04:27, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Deep cycle battery vs UPS battery[edit]

A true deep cycle differs from a typical UPS battery with "thin plates" and lower internal resistance and is NOT suitable for UPS float service. They are designed with "thick plates" and to be (deep)cycled and not continiously to be floated like in a typical UPS Standby application.

Under "Application" is it not better to remove all description with UPS. I took few days ago the freedom to remove it but the removal has been activated again.

Please advise.
