Early years

The article currently states:

"Within three years of the founding at Yale, chapters were founded at Bowdoin, Princeton University, Colby College, and Amherst College. Since that time, DKE has grown to over 64 chapters and has initiated over 85,000 members across North America."

Is there any reason 3 years is chosen for the first few chapters? It seems like an arbitary selection. Chapters were rapidly added after Yale. Tkessler 07:30, Mar 23, 2005 (UTC)

I don't really know why, but I suspect that establishing a couple of chapters in other colleges is a good indicator of whether a new fraternity will last more than a few years and that is why it's emphasized. -Lommer | talk 18:21, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)


It says that the Vanderbilt chapter was founded in 184_, which is highly unlikly seeing as the univeristy was founded in 1873, meaing the frat would have been wating 30 years for a univeristy to be built.

Reply: Original Gamma chapter was at University of Nashville. Chartered April 19, 1847 as the first fraternity there. Inactive 1850-55 when university activities were suspended. Chapter name "Gamma" was given to Harvard in 1851 but restored to Nashville in 1855. Inactive 1861-89, but was revived at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, on October 16, 1889. So the Chapter has been in existence since 1847 (except for the noted intervals) although at two different schools in the same city.

I note that as of 12/30/06 Wikipedia has deleted both the modern color version of the coat of arms and also the photo of the DKE pin. Based on the editing notes this may have been done by an automated copyright bot. There should be no issue with either of these - I paid to have the jpeg version of the Crest made as International had no such artwork, and I have since distributed it to Chapters and individual Dekes without royalty or fee. The photo of the pin is in the public domain. Can anyone decipher Wikipedia's arcane copyright tagging system and restore these images to the article? Thanks! Brent Tynan Phi Alpha '76

Sigma Chi Formation

Between the opening of the school year at Miami of Ohio in 1854 and the following Christmas, seven men were initiated into the Kappa Chapter of DKE (5 sophomores and two freshman). This large class of new initiates brought an unbalancing of power within the chapter. When Whitlaw Reid (a well known journalist) was elected Erodelphian (poet), 6 men objected.

The dispute was settled by Minor Millikin, a recent graduate. The election so inflamed the six who lost that they left to form a new fraternity: Sigma Chi. The six who left were Thomas Bell (class of 1857); James Caldwell (Class of 1857); Daniel Cooper (class of 1857); Isaac Jordan (class of 1857); Benjamin Runkle (class of 1857) and Franklin Scobey (class of 1858).

The two fraternities currently sit next to each other near Miami University's campus.

Yuan Schikau?

I removed the name of Yuan Schikau from the list of famous Dekes. The only hits on Google are mirrors of the list on Wikipedia. The President of the Republic of China was Yuan Shikai, and there's no evidence he ever went to Yale. ... discospinster 02:47, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Yuan Schikau is included in the Official Literature of Delta Kappa Epsilon International as a Famous Alumni. Therefore, untill it is proven that he is NOT a Deke, we will assume the official documents are true. Canadian Caesar 06:23, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Garcia Menocal

I removed the redundant reference to Bro. Menocal which appeared in both "Other Famous Dekes" and also in "Famous Political Figures". I left him in the latter, and more important, category. Brent Tynan Phi Alpha '76

Jeb Bush

There is no reference to Jeb Bush ever having been a Deke at the University of Texas so I removed him from the list of sitting state governors who are in DKE.

greek letters

dear all,

the motto in the right column says "Kerothen Philoi Aei" while in the greek text in the logo there is a letter phi instead of a theta in the first word. The article currently reads, in part, "This first Chapter was denoted Phi chapter and is the only fraternity at Yale that has never gone inactive. It also holds the distinction of being the longest uninterrupted chapter of DKE.".

Roosevelt's membership

Both Theodore and Franklin Delano Roosevelt are recorded as members of the Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity at Harvard. Theodore as class of 1880 and Franklin as class of 1904. They are listed both in the catalog of the Alpha Delta Phi Club of Harvard (1902) and the catalog of the Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity (various editions).

Theodore was a member of both fraternities as you could join a fraternity each year in college at Harvard. Members who did this were known to be part of the "Dickie Club". Franklin initiated, but it was into a defunct chapter, so is not actually registered as a member.

In light of this I think they should be removed from this article. Pneshamkin (talk) 21:43, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Controversies

I don't want to over due it, but due to recent questionable edits by possible UBC DKE members, I did check out Univ B.C. DKE and there are a few minor controversies there too. Probably not notable enough. Obviously any major ones should be added.

Meanwhile if DKE members are reading these pages, why not properly reference what they consider to be the positive material instead of merely deleted properly referenced material on controversies. CarolMooreDC (talk) 22:40, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

I agree. IP editors continue to remove referenced material from the Controversies section without using edit summaries. It would be more useful for them to discuss here, the reasons that they feel the material is not appropriate for the article. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 02:49, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Neither that article, nor the longer followup one from the same source, mention Delta Kappa Epsilon at all. Even if they did, the arrest of one of the members of the organisation is of no direct relevance to this article. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 18:17, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

I checked and deleted all the sources that are not relevant in this section. If someone took the time to actually read the sources they would see that some of them are not even correct or viewed as fact and are solely editorials. Additionally, individuals should focus on actual FACT instead of wanting to just show a group in a negative light. No group is prefect. I am a Brother of DKE but I also have a Masters. I went ahead and checked the sources for the content you deleted and your reasons for removing are invalid. The Bush statement was "opinionated," but it was stated as a fact in the article that he said that. You said in your second removal edit that the source mentioned Beta Theta Pi and not DKE, which is not accurate. Wikipedia is neutral, which means we include the good and the bad. Orphaned references in Delta Kappa Epsilon

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Delta Kappa Epsilon's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Controversy

In the above named section I have found a dead link and two further statements that need citing. If the named problems are not fixed soon they will be removed. Thank you.  — Myk Streja (when?) 05:41, 16 July 2017 (UTC)

I found the time to work on this and a bot fixed the dead link. What I ended up doing may or may not make everyone happy, but here it is: the editing done from the sources was slanted to make DKE look worse than they were. However, the sources did all exist and the reported incidents did occur. There was a lot of inverse peacock wording, like calling the now independent fraternity "rogue" and "dechaptered". The vice squad did not target DKE, they just happened by; they were not responding to specific complaints. The rapes were reported down a long chain, ending with the Berkeley police who had nothing to follow on with. The report given the police didn't even identify gender or what sexual acts occurred.
If you were looking for the removal of this paragraph, no can do. It is factual and sourced. I did clean up the language and restore a neutral POV.
