In regards to the ambiguity over the circumstances in which Deng Pufang became disabled, he himself states in an interview for the documentary "Mao's Bloody Revolution Revealed" (2007) that he 'deliberately jumped' from the building to escape torture.

Peng may perhaps be known for promoting the rights of the disabled, but he is better known for trading his access and influence with government officialdom for money. This is not uncommon among the children of the elite in China. However he has been perhaps the most active in this among his generation. Certainly he has devoted more time to opening wide the back door to private companies (in exchange for large sums of money) than he has spent in promoting the rights of the disabled.
