Excuse me; where is Route 66?

But if I had to walk the the world to make you fall for me; I promise you, I promise you I will." These are the lyrics to a song that I always thought was named "I Promise You I Will". Where I grew up in Los Angeles it was played on the radio frequently, however I cannot find any mention of it in the Depeche mode article or discography.

Route 66 and Personal Jesus are perhaps the two Depeche mode songs that most Americans know. Shouldn't it at least be mentioned in the article?

First song you mention is "The Promise" by When in Rome, not Depeche Mode. Secondly, no, I don't believe "Route 66" should be necessarily mentioned, because it's a B-side (it was the B-side in the UK, and it was the B-side in the US), and is covered properly at "Behind the Wheel". Actually, "Route 66" could be (and will be, I'll take care of it in a second) in a note to the singles section...the version of "Behind the Wheel" that charted on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US was the "Megamix" of the two songs. John5008 | talk to me 21:58, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

re: Charts[edit]

Chart and Sales info[edit]

Kudos to the article author. This info is valuable to researchers like myself. How does one go about finding sales and chart info? Do you pay a fee to Billboard and get the data? It doesn't seem to be on their website for free. Also, it seems next to impossible to find non-UK/US chart info on the web. I can find curret stats but nothing archived. Just out of curiosity, why include the Aussie and New Zealand charts but not Germany, Canada, Norway, etc? I realize chart info is a pain to research so I am not going to complain (nice to have archive info on the charts you do have). That's cool. I didn't have German chart info pre-People Are People so it was helpful. Still, I would love to see a comphrensive "one-stop" chart info article. It is weird how hard it is in this day and age to get what should be relatively straightforward info. Live Hear Now releases[edit]

I was wondering how the 50-date live recordings should be handled in the discography. I think it is unprecedented (I am not sure Pearl Jam released this many official live recordings) and a bit unweildy since if one is to do the entry, he or she would have to be careful to get the dates and set lists correct. I an considering it (as it is getting some attention in my book on the band) but I would prefer to wait until all 48 are released (48 because one show was cut short due to illness, and another was cancelled). Perhaps John, you could do a preliminary entry? Not to say that you can't do the whole shebang if you want, I just didn't want to seem lazy and give you all the work! :) Jackbox1971 01:49, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Remixes 86>98[edit]

I've noticed that the discography page doesn't mention this 2-disc limited edition that was released the time as The Singles 86>98. It was an official release, but I don't remember if it was available as retail so I assume it was a club promo. I believe Depeche Mode hold the record for the most British top 20/top 40 hits without having a number one (or even a top three song). Everyhit.com[edit]

In an attempt to stop the numerous recent reverts becoming a full-blown edit war can I just point Sunil060902 to Wikipedia's policy on on self-published sources: Self-published sources should never be used as third-party sources about living persons. Everyhit.com is a self-published source, if you read the website's about page you'll see that it is simply someone's pet project. The "record" itself is also of questionable notability: Why just the Top 40? Why not Top 10 or Top 75 etc? I suspect the record is set at Top 40 is because Everyhit only covers the Top 40. OK, I understand about the policies on sources. No further mention of the website will be made to the opener, but having checked my copy of Guiness British Hit Singles I can confirm the original statement is true, to the best of my knowledge. Dreaming of Me[edit]

It's listed as not being on an album whereas it does appear on "The Singles 81>85" albeit some years after the single was released BUT if someone wants a Depeche album featuring that track then The Singles 81>85 is the one.

Sorry to be pedantic, but I guess that's why we are here, right? "Dreaming of Me" is designated as a non-album single because it was not included on the original UK release of Speak and Spell, so when the single was released, it was not promoting an album, but rather was a stand-alone. Subsequent UK CD releases of the album do include Dreaming of Me as a "bonus track." But you are right to point out that continental and North American vinyl versions included it as a proper track. )But then you miss out on "I Sometimes Wish I Was Dead"!) Singles for promotional use[edit]

Due to the fact that "Peace" and even non-physical 7 inches like "Halo" are mentioned, what about the band's other promotional single releases? As far as I know there have been six of that kind of release:

  • 1981 "I Sometimes Wish I Was Dead", UK, flexi-7" from Flexipop magazine
  • 1984 "Told You So", Spain, 7"
  • 1988 "I Want You Now", Japan, 3" CDS
  • 1989 "Pleasure, Little Treasure (live)", France 7"+12"
  • 1993 "One Caress", USA, CD
  • 2006 "The Darkest Star", EU, 12"

Unfortunately, I do not have an official source for them but take a look at http://www.depmod.com. I always thought that the existence of those releases were something like "common knowledge" within Depeche fans. The Spanish "Told You So"-7" for example is a very "sought after" item, I believe. That's right, "One Caress" is the only promo-7" a video clip was made for. There is a performance of "Told You So" at the UK TV show "The Tube". By the way, all these releases can be found at the web page http://www.discogs.com/artist/Depeche+Mode which verifies the information given. I have found another two promotional singles there, the above mentioned is valid for them, too: no chart hit, no video clip available...

B-Sides & Instrumentals 81>98 and other notable unofficial compilations[edit]

Is is it worth mentioning the B-Sides & Instrumentals 81>98 album?

It's an unofficial release, but perhaps relevant enough to mention as a rare, though unofficial, compilation?

Live Videos?[edit]

I'm curious why some songs are being listed as having official "live" videos (i.e. Enjoy the Silence and Personal Jesus 1993, I Feel Loved 2001). I understand videos like Condemnation (Live) and Should Be Higher (Live) - released on the Videos 86>98 release and Video Singles Collection, respectively... but ETS and PJ live from 1993 were released as videos where, besides the Devotional video (among many, many other songs) - why are they being listed separately here? Maxi-Single &/or BONG: a problem here[edit]

In the mid-'90s, I picked up on Depeche Mode via the "Personal Jesus"/"Dangerous" CD. I hadn't been a particular fan, but this quirky collection of versions and remixes prompted me to dig back through their catalogue.

There's quite a series of them. Appellations differ, but the most common appears to be "Compact Disc Maxi-Single." A majority share similar disc graphics, starting with a string of linked circles (usually silver, sometimes white) running down the left side. At least one interferes with the prim BONG numbers presented in this article: 28, Walking In My Shoes, says it's "CD BONG 28".

Has anyone made an effort to gather a list together?

The CD singles with linked circles to the left are re-releases of the original singles, they were released as part of the Singles Box sets, but were also available separately. See each single for details.
As the Bong numbers didn’t start until Leave in Silence, the numbers on the re-releases will not match up with the Bong numbers. Kawayama (talk) 22:45, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Merge from Depeche Mode videography[edit]

The content on the discography page is generally more advanced than the content on the videography page—both the "music videos" and "video albums" sections are present on the discography page and get regularly updated, and the "DVD singles" and "tour projections" sections can be incorporated into pages of said singles and concert tours.
