Meaning of title[edit]

The liner notes (by Daniel Kavanaugh) to a 1970 Nonesuch recording of this work include a translation of Hindemith's inscription, which explains that the piece is about a minstrel who joins a company and builds upon the melodies it plays. Kavanaugh then writes that while "Schwanendreher" does literally mean "swan-turner," here it refers to an organ grinder, "perhaps because the long handle of his hurdy-gurdy resembled a swan's neck."
