Lees-Milne's comment on Sherborn

[edit]

In James Lees-Milne's Diaries (Ceaseless Turmoil, 1988-92) he made a not-uncharacteristically acidulous and disparaging reference to Sherborn's residence at Fawns Manor in light of what Lees-Milne mistakenly considered to be untruthful claims of 'having ancestors', revealing Lees-Milne's ignorance of Sherborn's descent from the family in whose possession Fawns Manor had long been. In fact, notwithstanding Lees-Milne's own pretensions to gentry status, Sherborn's lineage is of considerably greater antiquity than that of Lees-Milne; whilst- according to several sources- the Sherborns of Fawns Manor are represented in the Middlesex Muster Rolls for Foot Soldiers in 1338, with further early Bedfont records (of 1386, 1437 and 1440, etc) referring to the Sherborns, the Lees family (once of Thurland Castle, Lancashire) of which the Lees-Milne family was a cadet branch (founded in 1843) can be traced no further back than a will of 1615. Just a note left here in case anyone happens across Lees-Milne's mention and feels inclined to credit him with more understanding of the situation than he in fact possessed..!
