Change of command
[edit]LONG BEACH 12. CALIFORNIA. WEDNESDAY. JUNE 6. 1962 Rear Adm. Johnson Will Assume Command of Flotilla 11 Here Rear Adm. Ralph C. Johnson; on will take over command of Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla 1 in a ceremony at 10 am Thursday aboard the guided missile frigate USS Coontz at Long Beach Pier E. He will relieve Rear Adm. Edward A. Ruckner, who willi leave the 16-ship command for assignment to the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations in Washington, D. C Among those present for the ceremony will be Rear Adm. Kenneth L. Veth, commander, Pacific Mine Force, and the Naval Base on Terminal Island; Rear Adm. James O. Cobb, commander, Carrier Division 19; Rear Adm. Waldemar F. A. Wendt, commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla 7, and Rear Adm. Ned S p r o w, commandant, llth Coast Guard District. Adm. Johnson's previous assignment was as Navy Group Chief, Joint U. S. Military Mission for Aid to Turkey, with headquarters at Ankara, Turkey. Adm. Ruckner had held command of Cruiser Division 1 since March 13, 1961. On April 11, the division became Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla 11 as part of an administrative reorganization in the Pacific Cruiser-Destroyer Force- Regular flotilla flagship is the cruiser USS Los Angeles - Independent, California, 6 June 1962 Buckshot06 (talk) 19:54, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

[edit]Why is one specific staff officer mentioned as having served there? What is the particular public significance there?
