Early life[edit]

First, in this bio, it states that "[Tonks] took up the sport at 13 but gave it away while at college in Wanganui because other boys were not training hard enough." It's not clear when he stopped, as he began early, and was in the first eight for three years (according to this article). Then: he "continued to row for the Union B.C. after leaving school" (from the article again), and was in Dunedin in 1971.
