Origin of the Dieli name[edit]

I am Frank Dieli, currently in my 66th year and scion of James and Concetta Dieli, both deceased. Art Dieli is my uncle and he has done birth certificate research back to the 1700s in southern Italy. Dieli is not a proper Italian name, nor is it of Greek origin. There is little mystery to its origin through the deductive process of reason applying linguistic rules to the name. The only country in the region capable of routinely accepting the 'eli' ending is Switzerland. From there the choice is whether the name is of either the Geneva side or the Basel side, the former being excessively French influenced, the latter being German influenced. The obvious result is Basel, because the French language has little use for 'eli' ending nouns. From this one can inductively reason that the name came to the Italian landscape of matters by way of the Swiss Guards who are the military branch of the Roman Church. Likely, the Swiss Guards, then a dangerous profession during the age of papal wars, were given land grants in the south of Italy to secure the papal surzainety in the region. Remember that marriages were not documented for the common folk until the 1700s, when formalities of religious marriages were extended to commoners for raising funds for religious armies, both protestant and roman. In like manner, branches were established in France and Germany. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.106.47.42 (talk) 22:40, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
