Torture

[edit]

Beefart says: I am uncomfortable when a claim is made that a man was tortured when no evidence or reference is provided. Does anyone else have a view on this? The preceding unsigned comment was added by Captainbeefart (talk • contribs) .

Good, good. However, by the same token (NPOV) if the man was tortured, then the world ought to know about it. Anyone have a reference, dudes? Captainbeefart 00:10, 13 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Can't find anything on google... Mikker ... 00:29, 13 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi guys, does it mean that if something is not on Google then its not the truth?, I mean unless you are coming from Mars you will not know that the Apartheid system was the most brutal system in the world, chances are Dimitri Tsafendas was tortured while in custody, there are thousand of unreported/undocumented torture cases that happened during the Apartheid era for even far lesser (so called) crimes, i just feel we need to somehow mention the fact that he had a greater chance of being tortured while he was locked up, Even if we aren't sure of the exact details of what transpired during his arrest and subsequent trial.Bobbyshabangu (talk) 10:00, 28 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia policy requires that statements in articles be based upon, and limited to, neutrally reporting material that is already has significant coverage in reliable sources. See WP:N, WP:V, WP:OR and WP:POV for those requirements. If an account of something cannot be found in an Internet search or in a scholarly publication, then it likely is not suitable for inserting into an article. • Astynax talk 18:01, 30 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Murder

[edit]

"...Under the apartheid regime's laws, having been charged with murder, Tsafendas was given a cell on death row in Pretoria Central Prison..." This is loaded terminology. Tsafendas would have been convicted for murder in any other country as well. He also did do lots of damage to South Africa by murdering a very able leader.

Beefart says: I agree in part with the above. The sentence that is quoted has long bothered me becaue it is ambiguous. We should try to rewrite it to make it factual and neutral. Remember though, that Tsafendis was not convicted of anything. He was found to be insane. An insane man can kill but, in law, he cannot murder. He would certainly have been TRIED in any other country. As to the abilities of Verwoerd and what would have happened in South Africa had he survived: I'll let that one go through to the keeper....Captainbeefart 11:14, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Biased categories

[edit]

Classing him as falling under tyrannicides leads one to draw a direct conclusion that HF Verwoerd was a tyrant. This is hardly unbiased, this is opinion and biased opinion at that. Dr. Verwoerd was a legitimately elected leader. It is quite sufficient to classify him as an assassin and let people draw their own conclusions as to anything further. Organized

[edit]

I organized the article, adding an obituary as a source and did some general clean-up.--Thomas.macmillan (talk) 01:45, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Motive for murder

[edit]

It is said that Tsafendas vouched for insanity by claiming the worm in his stomach instructed him to kill Verwoerd, can anyone support this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 169.202.5.106 (talk) 08:48, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've added citations for this and other items. However, I could not find a reference to his being incarcerated at the Weskoppies hospital, and so have added a request for citation of that statement. • Astynax talk 17:07, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Removed statement regarding Weskoppies

[edit]

I've removed the statement that Tsafendas was held at Weskoppies psychiatric hospital. Although this is where cases are currently held at the pleasure of the State President, I have only come across references to him being kept at Sterkfontein hospital until his death. The citation request has gone unanswered. If anyone has a reference for internment at Weskoppies, please do reinsert with a footnote citing the source. • Astynax talk 06:03, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

The following by editor 41.145.142.217 was inserted into the references section:

"The story of the giant tapeworm was an apparent police concoction because the transcript of the interrogation, seen by Truth and Reconciliation investidators and by journalist Terry Bell makes only one, brief, reference to having suffered a tapework infestation at one stage. In fact Tsafendas, asked why he had killed Verwoerd, stated consistently that it was because Verwoerd was a bad man. The transcript, far from revealing a raving lunatic, is quite clear and coherent."

The material cited in note 10, which the edit history shows this is expanding upon, only describes the testimony of experts at the trial and not the interrogation. So this seems to be something which should be placed elsewhere in the article, along with reference citation(s) for the information. • Astynax talk 19:03, 16 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Picture

[edit]

I think it's important to get a picture of Dimitri on this article. Anyone knows the production company that interviewed him the last before he died ??, Bobbyshabangu talk 12:45, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I do not know the name of the media company, but they would still own the copyright. Does the government of South Africa have any public domain photo archives which could be used for pictures of both Tsafendas and Verwoerd? It seems bizarre that we don't even have an image of Verwoerd. Previous photos have been removed due to copyright questions. • Astynax talk 16:38, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
