Clean up needed

This article is in serious need of a clean up. The subject is a bit too technical for me to help much at this stage. Please see Wikipedia's manual on style, as well as the policies and guidelines. Thanks. --Evb-wiki 14:53, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Citation merging

There are several scattered "References" sections. They should be merged to a single section while retaining indication of which section(s) referred to them. -- SEWilco (talk) 21:48, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Clean up needed

There is a need for a serious cleanup of this article.

GIS is extremely broad, and Distributed GIS is a high-level subcategory of GIS. The major organization is GIS> Distributed GIS> Internet GIS> Web GIS, each having sub-categories.

I have created pages for Internet GIS and Web GIS. I also created categories for Distributed GIS, Internet GIS, and Web GIS, and placed them into the GIS subcategory, organized based on the hierarchy above. Terms will be very important to get all the other pages organized. The Web is not a synonym for the internet, and many services, such as web mapping, are far below distributed GIS in the organizational schema.

There are many pages involving this topic that are scattered, and this one should serve as a unifying umbrella for them. To do this, we will need to do some major restructuring of the organization of this page.

Mixed topics

This article is addressing two topics, that of parallel processing, and that of distributed functionality. It woudl be better to split into two articles. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.169.39.157 (talk) 16:48, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

I can't believe this took so long to address. Yes. Parallel computing and distributed computing are generally different.
In an attempt to reorganize, I googled the terms and checked their Wikipedia page. There is some case for parallel processing being a use of the term distributed computing, but the terms are blurry. I'm going to move this section under "types," add sources, and generally rework it in the coming weeks. If anyone has a strong counter opinion, I'm happy to discuss here.
