Student Editor

[edit]

I am a student editor currently taking a technical editing course at Texas A&M University, and I am working on this article for a project. I will be trying to improve the encyclopedic tone, organization. Please let me know of any questions or concerns. .stughi. (talk) 22:49, 26 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have finished my draft of this article. Please refer to the sandbox on my user page: User:.stughi./Distributed_firewall

Changes Made:

  • Tried to include links for all terms that might be unfamiliar to the general readership.
  • Tried to remove all simple examples used for teaching (WP:NOTTEXTBOOK)
  • Tried to remove all leading/rhetorical questions (WP:NOTTEXTBOOK) (WP:RHETORICAL)
  • Reorganized sections into a setup that is more practically-oriented, and hopefully improves reader understanding (WP:PYRAMID).
  • I removed the Evolution of distributed firewall because it seemed like an abstract replacement for a History section; it stated that the distributed firewall came about because of flaws in the conventional firewall, but there were no specific events that were used to back these assertions. I thought that for someone outside of the field, who might not have an industry-level knowledge of conventional firewalls, it would be difficult to understand (WP:EPSTYLE) (WP:TONE).
  • I tried to simplify (make concise) wording, to conform to encyclopedic tone (WP:TERSE) (WP:TONE).

General changes to be made:

  • Add pictures
  • Add a History section

Open Questions:

  • How does a distributed firewall work, in layman's terms?
  • The material that this article is taken from is more than 20 years old; how are distributed firewalls (practically) used today?
    • Are there firewalls or other security systems that have more of an advantage than distributed firewalls on conventional firewalls in the respects that a distributed firewall was in the article?
