The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Sri.YS Jaganmohan Reddy, proposed the renaming of Dr NTR University of Health Sciences as Dr YSR University of Health Sciences. The bill was passed by the legislative assembly on September 21 of 2022. It is renamed after the former chief minister Dr YS Rajasekhar Reddy who was a professional doctor and initiated the "108 ambulance scheme", free treatment for poor middle-class people in private hospitals through a scheme called "Aarogyasri". These two schemes drew the attention of the whole of India to the Andhra Pradesh government and observed the benefit to poor people. For this reason, the present chief minister, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy son of Dr YS Rajasekhar Reddy, mentioned it is good to rename the medical university in the name of DR YSR amidst protests in the assembly by opposition parties.
