"back for mui tsai, literally maids." They may have been maids, but literally they are 'little sisters'. Mui tsai, were adopted children from poor families who were taken care of but had to work as maids or general servents.

'or maids' may be a better phrasing if you don't want to add a discussion of what mui tsai were.
