[edit]Porgy and Bess: Ira Gershwin wrote 'There's a boat dat's leaving soon for New York', and had a major hand in 'It ain't necessarily so', but Heyward wrote most of the other lyrics.
Somewhat more complicated than that: Ira Gershwin wrote some lyrics that were based on Heyward's lines from the play ("Bess, You Is My Woman Now"). In those cases, Gershwin wanted to share credit, but Heyward demurred. In one instance ("I Got Plenty of Nothin'"), Heyward wrote lyrics to music that George Gershwin had already written; given Heyward's lack of experience writing words to music, Ira Gershwin then acted as an editor and polisher. But it is now clear that most of the lyrics were predominantly Heyward's work.
The Good Earth: I deleted the statement that he wrote "the 1934 screen adaptation of Pearl Buck's The Good Earth." Firstly, the film appeared in 1937. Secondly, I can find no evidence that he contributed to the film at all. 81.139.222.13 06:19, 20 August 2005 (UTC)
- IMDb has him listed as The Good Earth (1937) (screenplay constructor) (uncredited), whatever that means. Zoe 06:32, August 20, 2005 (UTC)
Probably should be reinstated---He did write the original adaptation of The Good Earth for Irving Thalberg at MGM in 1934. The treatment passed through many other hands by the time the film was made and released in 1937 (and as is customary, the last writers received screen credit). But according to Hutchisson, the final film remains in large part as Heyward wrote it.
