Meaning

[edit]

What exactly does "Dubya" mean? Becuase there is no evident discussion for this page, there has to be a reason for it. --Kilo-Lima 17:02, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think a famous alias (even it has a negative meaning) is the reason --Jackcsk 00:06, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Is this really true? Where is the source for this alias? --HappyCamper 02:39, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's everywhere on the Internet. I personally got it from slashdot.
For example:

Even Wikipedia has a huge number of uses:

"Dubya" is a colloquial American pronunciation for the letter W. People call Bush Dubya because of his down home style. Gilliamjf 23:13, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When two different individuals have the same name, such as President George Bush and President George Bush, it is a common American convention to include their middle name or middle initial in order to distinguish them: President George H.W. Bush and President George W. Bush. (For father and son, there is sometimes tradition of appending Senior and Junior respectively. However, abbreviating President George Bush, Junior to "Bush Junior" or just "Junior" is self-evidently diminutive and could be easily interpreted as derogative.) Hence the most common appellation is "George W Bush", much like "Bill Clinton" or "Ronald Reagan". George W Bush is shortened to the nickname W. The nickname W is in turn given the abbreviated pronunciation Dubya. The nickname Dubya is commonly used. Whether Dubya is affectionate/informal/down-home or disrespectful/informal/pejorative depends upon the speaker and listener. I hope that clears it up for y'all. --Brokenfixer 04:27, 16 January 2006 (UTC), who is Texan enough to use "y'all" in conversations.[reply]

Censorship on Wikipedia

[edit]

I get the impression that supporters of G W Bush have stopped a proper explanation of Dubya appearing here.Barbara Shack 08:33, 11 Nov 2006 (EST)

What are you referring to? I checked the page history, and no discussion has been deleted from this talk page. --Tim4christ17 talk 03:17, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

On Wikinfo there is this article about the nickname, "Dubya. The Wikinfo article has relevant information about American attitudes to George W Bush. This information should be in the Dubya article or in the article about George W Bush. I will enter it.Barbara Shack 15:48, 27 November 2006 (UTC)I’ve put it in under George W. Bush#Trivia. If it stays that could help prove there is no censorship. Barbara Shack 15:59, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The trivia section has now been deleted. I think that proved sensorship.Barbara Shack 16:17, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Trivia sections are not appropriate for an encyclopedia. See WP:AVTRIV and WP:TRIVIA. —Centrxtalk • 04:12, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You've cited a guideline and an essay to justify your argument, neither of which are policy. It may be your opinion, and there are certainly arguments for that opinion, but you shouldn't state it as though it is absolute and non-negotiable.
Anyway, the "Dubya" content would probably fit best in the existing "Criticism and public perception" section, as it is directly related to Bush's public perception. Care will have to be taken to ensure the content is neutral; I suggest mentioning the use of the nickname in both the derrogatory and "down-to-earth" senses so as to maintain a balance of sorts. -- Y|yukichigai 20:16, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't remove it. I'm just saying that calling it some sort of conspiracy when there are legitimate reasons related to the encyclopedia is ridiculous. —Centrxtalk • 22:26, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This may be a better place to redirect this to. --66.41.102.194 17:59, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Plain redirect is wrong

[edit]

We are doing a disfavor to the readership with a plain redirect to George W. Bush. I came to this article (Dubya) specifically because I wished to understand where the nick name comes from, what it means, and so on. I was only able to get some info by going to history and seeing the versions prior to the redirect (the ones by Barbara Shack).

Note that the George W. Bush article does not even MENTION the word Dubya (the word is simply not there). So people who wish to understand what 'Dubya' is are at a loss. This is NOT a dictionary issue. We're not talking about some simple definition of a word. In fact, I suspect most dictionaries would NOT have an entry for Dubya. It is very fair game in an encyclopedia IMHO. GustavoDuarte

That information is in the George W. Bush article. The issue is that "Dubya" doesn't warrant a whole separate article. —Centrxtalk • 15:19, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As this redirect is currently listed at WP:RFD, can an admin add {{rfd}} to the top of the page? Thanks. Hut 8.5 17:38, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Done. —David Eppstein 18:10, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please change [[List of United States Presidential names#43_—_George_Walker_Bush]] to [[List of United States Presidential names#42 — George Walker Bush]] because this redirect to "43 — George Walker Bush" section at that article does not work anymore. 198.189.198.2 21:47, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The list shouldn't have been changed. I've reverted the edits that caused the issue. Cheers. --MZMcBride 01:54, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

{{editprotected}} Can an admin please (re-)fix this page to redirect to List of United States Presidential names#George_Walker_Bush? The current redirect does not point to the correct section. Thanks, CraigBox (talk) 18:02, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed again. BTW, you have to remove the tl| from the code above in order to display the template - the tl is there so you can see what the template was without having to display it. Hut 8.5 21:50, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Currently sorting redirects by placing redirect templates. Wish to add the following two templates: {{R from alternative name}} and {{R to section}}. Thanks. -- OlEnglish (Talk) 03:02, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

{{editprotected}} The contents of this redirect should be changed to:

#REDIRECT [[List of nicknames of United States presidents#George W. Bush]]{{R from alternative name}}{{R to section}}

because the target article has been moved to the indicated title. (And does this redirect really still need to be protected?) - dcljr (talk) 06:12, 5 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
