Russian knowledge[edit]

I read in one secondhand account that Nixon kept the Russians fully apprised of Duck Hook, especially the nuclear solution. Is there any corroboration of this? -98.116.26.145 (talk) 00:21, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There is a Dark Docs on Youtube which talks about this. There would have been no practical way for us to release nuclear weapons against North Vietnam without informing the USSR beforehand. I would love to find more primary sources on this but as far as I'm aware only two documents about this have been officially declassified as of this date. 02:49 14 September 2021 (UTC) FLJuJitsu (talk)

jugular diplomacy[edit]

I believe it's worth mentioning that DUCK HOOK was a part of Nixon-Kissinger "jugular diplomacy". Kissinger's (the good cop) role was to convey Nixon's (the bad cop) threats for the purpose of intimidating Norh Vietnamese into negotiations. Therefore, DUCK HOOK wad not a REAL plan of military operation, but merely a bluff. As I understand it in large part with this one both Nixon and Kissinger where "Bad Cops" and Kissenger actually went around the SecDef who was opposed to the plan on every level. It would be worth debating how much this was a real plan Vs. part of Nixon's "Mad Man" persona.
