No project tags[edit]

Note: This page does not carry {WP Portugal}{WP Spain}{WP Geography} tags since this is the preserved Talk page of merged duplicate Duero stub which was merged into main article at Douro. In ictu oculi (talk) 23:54, 13 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Previous name/merge discussion[edit]

I propose this article be merged with Douro or deleted. The Douro article, though it may have a Portuguese informational bias, is much more complete and is about the river's full course as it exists in Spain and Portugal. As far as I can tell, this article adds no information except to distinguish the spelling difference by setting it off in a separate and less complete article, despite that the Portuguese spelling is mentioned in the first line of the other article and if merged, can be made a redirect thereof. If more information on the Spanish portion of the Duero/Douro is needed, can't and shouldn't that be added to the other article? --Fuhghettaboutit 12:25, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Move from Douro to Duero[edit]

I feel that the recent move Douro > Duero was potentially contentious and should not have been made without discussion here followed by a consensus being reached. DBaK (talk) 12:08, 7 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. This move was not obtained through consensus, but seems like an afterthought based on little research, and former discussions. I am unable to obtain the referenced "2.5 million results versus 850K" indicated by the mover. In fact, using Google as a base reference, as much as the results for either seem proportionate, the reality is that the "Douro" reference refers to the river in the English context, while the Duero references are primarily on Spanish-speaking sites. This is purely anecdotal, and not a complete investigation. Also, anecdotally, as a person raised in Canada and familiar with the English usage, the river has never been referred to as the Duero. I propose that this article be reverted and formal discussion be initiated, with the mover specifying the reasoning and citations for this move (or vica versa). ruben jc ZEORYMER (talk) 12:56, 7 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I was shying from contesting the move as it could reflect my bias, but there are a few good arguments weighting in favor of "Douro" being the main article and "Duero" the redirect. This pertains mainly to the fact that this river is much more important for Portugal than it is for Spain, the former country harbouring (no pun intended) its lower course, even if for a shorter length and covering a smaller part of its drainage basin.
As for established preference within an English language context (sadly lacking a proper English name, unlike Tagus), it seems rather silly to use Google hits to ascertain it, but even that seems to be inaccurate as Zeorymer above hints at. Using a crude method to restrict searching to English texts (i.e., by adding the word "the", typical of English and absent both in Portuguese and Spanish), I got these Google results:
So, if differential Google hits was the sole methodology to decide on established preference in English, it was wrongly done and needs to be either otherwise supported, or dully undone.

Article needs to be speedily moved back to Douro as that is the prevalent term in English to refer to this river. Google Trends shows that "Douro river" is much more popular than "Duero river". The thing is that searching for "Duero" gives a bunch of Spanish-language results which aren't used in English to refer to this river. Encyclopedia Britannica and ODO also list Douro. 79.68.204.167; 18:21 7 July 2013

The result of the move request was: Controversial move reverted by WP:BRD Undiscussed move was counter result of previous merger discussion at Talk:Duero and Talk:Douro and evidently controversial. See also user Talk page and requests from 2 other editors; User has not responded to invite to further discuss. Also RM closed as malformated - undiscussed move of article only relocated article alongside defunct rump Talk page for previously merged stub article Talk:Duero leaving stable article discussion page Talk:Douro behind. Any new RM should inititiate from stable title and take place on Talk:Douro. In ictu oculi (talk) 23:51, 13 July 2013 (UTC) (non-admin closure).
