Gilgamesh And The Bible.
[edit]I removed the part where this said, as a matter of fact, that the Epic Of Gilgamesh was a source for the Biblical Flood story. I did this not for Religious Reasons, but Scholarly.
The general view is that both the Epic and the Flood Of Genesis were derived from the same Oral Tradition, not that the Bible directly toook from the Epic Of Gilgamesh.
I know its popular History online, especially with Militant Atheists, but its not actually proven that the Author of the Genesis Flood Account actually used the Epic Of Gilgamesh as a source, much less derived the entire narrative from it.
Rewrite
[edit]Even split off from history, this page is sadly lacking. It is a list of "mythology of all nations." It does not discuss how these works influenced the modern fantasy genre, and in many cases, it offers no reason to believe that they did.
I will be adding such info and references and ruthlessly deleting anything for which I can find no support for its influence.
We probably should also organize the article not in the chronology that they appeared in history but in the order in which they influenced fantasy. Goldfritha 17:59, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
- Some of the info included here may be proper to put into history of fantasy, and some from that pages perhaps belongs here, but such matters should be viewed with care. Goldfritha 18:03, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
- I am puzzled as to the relationship between this article and the articles Fantasy, Fantasy literature, History of fantasy. The comment above would seem to indicate that this article was split from "History of fantasy". Is that correct? The history is unclear to me. My concern is with the possible duplication of editing effort here and the possibility that merges are needed. Rwood128 (talk) 13:10, 26 May 2017 (UTC)

Citations
[edit]I've started to provide citations where I can and indicate where they are needed where I can't. Note that merely providing a citation may not be sufficient; assertions have to be not only true but relevant to the genre fantasy. Goldfritha 21:53, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
- I'm starting the purge. Anything that lacks a reference or does not explain its relevance to the genre of fantasy may vanish. Goldfritha 00:58, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
- I'm also retitling the sections. The sources of fantasy need not themselves be fantasy; many vital realistic works have been as large an influence on the genre as anything listed here. Goldfritha 01:13, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Structure
[edit]The regional/temporal split up doesn't do much for organization. Development is more logically in the subgenres that became fantasy -- as for instance, action/adventure tales from Scott to Dumas. Goldfritha 01:48, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Change title?
[edit]Are there any objections to changing the title of this article to "Early history of Fantasy literature" or "Beginnings of fantasy literature"? I have also suggested on Talk:History of fantasy that a new article might be created from that article entitled "History of twentieth century fantasy literature".
