See also Athletic of Philadelphia#Name. This section makes several points deliberately. Some of them should be made for general reference in a section of NABBP, eventually perhaps in an article on ballclub (nick)names. Right? For example, there are related, general points about city names as roots of club names and about teams representing cities. There is a general point about making plurals by analogy to pluralizing family names.

Second, how does this section now succeed or fail for the Eckford Base Ball Club? --P64 04:55, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The explanation could easily be applied to any of the New York clubs. Maybe a brief mention here and then a separate article on marketing of sports teams and the varying usage of nicknames (which could be quite lengthy if one gets carried away). For example, after the success of the Cincinnati Red Stockings, suddenly everyone was calling themselves "Stockings": Chicago White Stockings, St. Louis Brown Stockings, even the Mutual Green Stockings... and, of course, the Boston Red Stockings, which were essentially the Cincinnati Red Stockings transferred to Boston.
