In the 1980s I visited Ecton, and saw its steeply sloping graveyard, the church and the folly. The latter has a 2nd story set at 45 degrees to the ground floor, all as described in Pevner's "Staffordshire". In the 1990s things were different. All three roads to Ecton were county signposted to divert the driver away. The entry from the Manifold Way was labelled "Private Road, No Entry". I did enter once or twice, and found a caravan or farm truck blocking further entry. What is happening here? Atomic waste disposal? Too dramatic perhaps, but no millionaire seems to have built himself a home here; the houses just look derelict with broken windoes.
