My friend and I are trying to direct this play and couldn't be more excited. We found the story and all of it's subplots well woven. It is just an amazing piece about many aspects of the human condition. What people will do to themselves for the love of their children. The movie was riviting and I feel that it should be rediscovered by theater entusiasts as it is a very well written piece and universal in the themes.

Abortion / Larry[edit]

The existing article reads, "Boult subtly suggests Larry abort the child, but the doctor refuses and offers Betty medical and financial assistance instead."

This is not accurate; there is never any suggestion that *Larry* be the one to perform the abortion. When Larry asks why Boult has summoned him, Boult says "Miss Foxley's claim may be a mistaken one." He wants Larry's help in ascertaining whether the girl is really pregnant, as opposed to lying or perhaps just being mistaken. To that end, Boult begins their conversation with Betty saying that the first step in dealing with a problem is determine if it even really exists. Larry then asks Betty if she just believes on her own that she's pregnant or whether she's actually been to her own doctor to confirm it.

Once that conversation is finished and it's clear she's really pregnant, Boult then refers to the fact than they need a "plan" for what to do next. But the key is that before he says anything at all about what his "plan" is, he very explicitly and insistently asks Larry to leave. So even if his plan is abortion (and I agree that the subtext of the scene strongly suggests that it is), there's nothing indicating that he's looking for Larry to be the one to do it. Thus there is nothing for the doctor to "refuse". And all Larry says as he leaves the room is "I'm in the book" if she should need him, far from offering medical/financial assistance.
