Cleanup

[edit]

This article had a cleanup tag from 2007

On July 14, 2009, I did significant reorganization to the article, also adding content and cleaning up the references. I have removed the cleanup tag. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rdougellis (talkcontribs) 20:39, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A Peculiar Footnote

[edit]

In generational succession, there were three men named Claudius Lysias Chilton. Their years were: First 1856-1914, Second 1879-1929, Third 1917-1991. Each became a minister and each used an Anglicized form of Claudius for their name.

The grandfather and grandson used Claude. The middle Claudius - who assisted E.M. Bounds in publishing - signed his name as CLAUD, to help avoid being confused with his father. Pedants have changed CLAUD to CLAUDE so often that they have confused members of the Chilton Family about which forebear wrote what, when.

In the E.M. Bounds work called "Prayer and Trouble" is a poem attributed to Claudius L. Chilton. It is not known today to the Chilton Family whether editor Claud is quoting his father, a remarkable poet and hymnodist, or is himself the author of the poem.
