I shall be reviewing this article against the Good Article criteria, following its nomination for Good Article status.

Checking against GA criteria[edit]

GA review (see here for criteria)
  1. It is reasonably well written.
    a (prose): b (MoS):
The lead is too short for an article of this length, please check the criteria at WP:LEAD
Early Life: Due to his family's Christian background and his upbringing in predominantly Muslim Middle Eastern countries, Said once referred to himself as a "Christian wrapped in a Muslim culture": With an unexceptionally Arab family name like Said connected to an improbably British first name (my mother much admired the Prince of Wales in 1935, the year of my birth), I was an uncomfortably anomalous student all through my early years: a Palestinian going to school in Egypt, with an English first name, an American passport and no certain identity at all. This needs to be reformatted so that it is obvious that the quote starts at "Christian wrapped and finishes at no certain identity at all..
I note that some quotes in the article as wrapped in {{cquote}} and some in <blockquote> Consistency is needed. I am of course just referring to substantial quotes of several sentences.
Career: The Barenboim-Said Foundation, based in Seville and financed by the Junta de Andalucía (Regional Government of Andalusia), which Said and Barenboim had worked together to establish, was officially constituted in 2004. Please restructure, it reads as if Said and Barenboim established the Regional Government!
The paragraphs in this section could be better arranged, some are only one sentence long.
Orientalism: So far as the United States seems to be concerned, it is only a slight overstatement to say that Moslems and Arabs are essentially seen as either oil suppliers or potential terrorists. Very little of the detail, the human density, the passion of Arab-Moslem life has entered the awareness of even those people whose profession it is to report the Arab world. What we have instead is a series of crude, essentialized caricatures of the Islamic world presented in such a way as to make that world vulnerable to military aggression. needs a citation.
Main argument: make the attribution to Orientalism 11 into a numbered footnote.
Edward Said Memorial Lectures: The MoS deprecates lists in articles, perhaps create a separate stub and mention the major lectures here in prose form.
I feel that the Bibliography section would be better presented in a simpler format than the table, using just the {{cite book}} template or format such as that at John_Buchan#Fiction. The details of who wrote the preface are not really relevant here. Likewise the fact that he wrote a foreword to Kipling's Kim is not relevant; Joseph Conrad and Autobiography do need wiki-linking in the title Joseph Conrad and the Fiction of Autobiography
  2. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
a (references): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR):
Said earned a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude (1957) from Princeton University and a Master of Arts (1960) and a Ph.D. (1964) from Harvard University. dow ehave a cite for this?
References #70 - #98 are just bare URLs, need properly formatting in a manner consistent with the rest. Also refs #8 - #15
Ref #98 failed verification; Ref #39 [1] is a dead link; Ref #32 [2] is a dead link; fottnote #2 [3] is a dead link
  3. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects): b (focused):
  4. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
    Fair representation without bias:
  5. It is stable.
    No edit wars, etc.:
  6. It is illustrated by images, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free images have fair use rationales): b (appropriate use with suitable captions):
  7. Overall:
    Pass/Fail:

OK, I would like the concerns above to be addressed and then I will take a further look and go through the references thoroughly. On hold Jezhotwells (talk) 19:28, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
