GA Review

[edit]
This review is transcluded from Talk:Effects of Tropical Storm Allison in Texas/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

The article looks good. There are just a few things that I found:

  1. What is the significance for this article of the flash flood warnings in Louisiana? Is it for comparison purposes?
  2. In the first paragraph of the "Impact section", two short sentences are found back-to-back: "Minimal beach erosion was reported. Impact was minimal near the coast." Is it possible to combine these sentences to make the prose less choppy?
  3. Is it standard in similar articles to list FEMA as the author in the references section? It would make more sense to me to list FEMA as the publisher, as there is no specific author mentioned.
  4. A retrieval date is needed for reference 21.
  5. "By midnight June 9" -> "By midnight on June 9"
  6. "President George W. Bush declared 28 counties in Texas, as disaster areas." No comma needed.
  7. FEMA should be spelled out in full the first time it is used: "Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)"
  8. Sentences shouldn't start with numbers, so I would change "17% of that was spent for temporary housing" to "Of that amount, 17% of that was spent for temporary housing"
  9. Is there a source available for the eighteen-wheel trucks floating down freeways?
  10. I was wondering what "which was forced to transmit its broadcast to a satellite truck" meant, so I checked the sources. I couldn't find a mention of the TV station, though. GaryColemanFan (talk) 15:27, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Any questions or comments about these concerns can be placed here, as I have the review on my watchlist. I will place the article on hold to allow these concerns to be addressed and/or discussed. Best wishes, GaryColemanFan (talk) 15:36, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the review. I think I got everything. As for the FEMA references, while there isn't a standard, per se, there is a precedent. If you feel it should be changed, let me know, and I'll get it done right away. Cheers, –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 15:49, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If there is a precedent set, I'm fine with that. The source of the information is clear from the information provided, which is the goal of the reference, so I think it's fine. All of my concerns seem to have been addressed, so I will promote the article. Great job! GaryColemanFan (talk) 22:55, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There is a bit of a dispute on the damage. I claim it's $5 billion, per Approximately $1.5 billion of the $5 billion in damage caused by Allison came from the Medical Center., which is stated here, also the storm in total did $8.5 billion, including damage in numerous other states. The sources claim $5 billion in Texas, but LightandDark2000 says it did $8.5 billion. Some sources say it only did $5 billion, but that's not accurate either. It's reasonable to assume it did $3.5 billion across the rest of the nation. --Hurricane Tracker 495 22:52, 19 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

According to the updated TCR, it's been revised upward to nearly US$9 billion. So that's the figure we should go with. LightandDark2000 🌀 (talk) 23:08, 19 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Allison's damage was $8.5 billion. When I added up all the figures of other states in the article, I got $301.4 million. But it doesn't include every state, and $5 billion seems to be a sourced amount. --Hurricane Tracker 495 23:22, 19 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The 5 billion was initially in the TCR and super-seeded by the 8.5B.Jason Rees (talk) 23:32, 19 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The TCR revised the total damage upward to $9 billion (2002 USD). That would mean that according to your calculations, HurricaneTracker495, the damage total for Texas alone should be $8.7 billion. News media sources are not as reliable. Especially ones that are clearly outdated. Now, since the TCR is the most reliable source we have here, we are going to go with the figures cited in the report. And that is that. LightandDark2000 🌀 (talk) 23:34, 19 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
