Does Effluence exist?

[edit]

This article (Special:Permalink/1019698989) smells like a hoax. But the real situation is more innocent, and more complicated.

User:D A R C 12345 created the article about a "locality" in May 2018. Before that Effluence was already listed as a land parish at Irrara County and Barrona County since 2007 by User:VirtualSteve. Technically, cadastral parishes are very different from gazetted towns and localities. I think "area" is a more apt term than "locality" and will change that soon.

Before going into the issues of why the current article seems to be about a fake place, I must say that there is evidence it does exist. Or at least did exist in 1913. See Map of the County of Barrona : western division : land district of Bourke : N.S.W. 1913. Effluence is clearly marked, split into two halves, on the east side of the Paroo River, north of Tantawanga, and west of Paroo parishes.

Problems with current article

[edit]
  • Population is given as that of "Wanaaring area", yet – as far as I can tell from maps and satellite images – the populated part of Wanaaring town is outside the parish, west of the Paroo in Wanaaring parish of Ularara County.
    • Unfortunately the device I'm using right now can't load ABS maps, so I'll need to switch to a laptop to dig into their boundaries.
  • Climate graph is for Wanaaring, which already has an article. Why repeat the graph here if there is no weather station? (May be complicated if the weather station is at the airstrip, which does seem to be within the parish.)
  • Citation 1, supposedly to Wanaaring 2016 quickstats on ABS, has the wrong SSC and actually links to somewhere called Lower Creek.
  • Citation 2 is checkY good, I missed this earlier. Shows the northern half of Effluence within Irrara County in 1964. Note that the county boundary follows the river but the shire boundary diverts around the town. This may have been the cause of confusion.
  • Citation 3 for Irrara County at GNB is broken (thanks, NSW government). An archived version doesn't mention Effluence, only Irrara.
  • Citation 4 is a general reference for Köppen–Geiger climate and isn't specific to Effluence.
  • Citation 5 (BOM data) is for Wanaaring Post Office, not the airstrip.
