El Refugio is a friendly community in NE El Salvador. There is very little industry there except for a block making company. The streets of the town go from concrete, to brick, to stone, to cumbling block and stone to dirt paths. the people are very friendly and the police actually watch out for the Americans. About 1/3 of the people speak some English and want to practice it on you. There are over 30 churchs in this community of 5-8,000 people. I have been there 4 times. It is safe to walk at night on the streets. The city is divided by a highway. There are nice homes within the town limits and all are guarded by walls. The only time to see in is holidays when the gates are open. Cars are few and the people travel to other towns and cities by bus. What is most amazing is the respectfullness of the people. The people are clean and poverty is not above the norm. There are parts of the town that are poor and there are parts that are middle class, but all of the people are nice. It would be a wonderful place to live.John from Ohio (talk) 15:25, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
