Photons / momentum[edit]

In introd., "...for deflecting solar wind protons and extracting momentum from them", should be reworded - photons are massless.

See page Solar sail, section "Criticism", "It has been proposed that momentum exchange from reflection of photons is an unproven effect that may violate the thermodynamical Carnot rule." (Weirpwoer (talk) 00:22, 31 January 2010 (UTC))[reply]

Intrinsic Limitations[edit]

Edited to remove a misleading line about E-Sails being unable to slow down (Refer edit log).

There should also probably (weasel words are fine in the talk page) be a mention of the lower flux of charged particles as one goes further away from a central star, which would result in decreasing performance as the sail recedes from the star. That said, there are multiple sources of particles. It's not only solar wind. The flux of Galactic Cosmic rays, with their heavy ions, tends to increase the further you go from a star (because there's a smaller solar wind to keep the GCRs at bay). High energy photo-ionisation mediated electron/ion sputtering could also release charged particles... and this would happen regardless of a planetary magnetosphere. (Think of how the surface of the moon is charged, and how there's dust kicked up off the lunar surface due to this charging, which is itself a result of exposure to harsh PHOTO radiation). 123.237.156.43 (talk) 05:52, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
