Images Added to Article

[edit]

I located and uploaded two images to Wikimedia:

1) The title page of Rowe's Devout Exercises of the Heart in Meditation and Soliloquy, Prayer and Praise, published in 1737.

2) The article "The Life of Mrs. Elizabeth Row" that appeared in the The Gentleman's Magazine, published in May 1739.

Both of these images are important because it provides context for the work that Row wrote and the work written about Rowe. LesBrooks (talk) 20:35, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Editing suggestions

[edit]

These improvements are wonderful. I think the paragraph on her influence on the novel needs some revising. This is one sentence: "Recently, scholars have interpreted Rowe as a pivotal figure in the development of the English novel: Rowe borrowed stock characters and situations from the late 17th and early 18th century French and Italian romances popular in England, transforming the outward struggles to save the body of the heroine from seducers, to saving the mind and soul of the heroine from the corrupt world through the virtuous self-control that results from contemplation, thus sealing the plot trajectory of subsequent fiction as evidenced in later novels such as Eliza Haywood's Betsy Thoughtless, Samuel Richardson's Clarissa and Frances Burney's Cecilia. [2]" It would read better with shorter sentences. LLRungegordon (talk) 23:10, 30 November 2015 (UTC) Also, the citations are formatted wrong. I'm not sure how to fix this, but each reference should only be listed once, and each time it is cited, another letter appears in the List of Works cited. As it is, the list contains many duplicates, and at least one (First mention of Walmsey) runs into a second citation (Backscheider).LLRungegordon (talk) 23:14, 30 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that thoughtful assessment. I think you can safely tackle the stylistic problem yourself We're all on the same side: Wikipedia needs to be encyclopedic, i. e. terse but lucid and meticulously accurate. I'm struggling a bit with the new reference system too. If you look in the "Edit" mode of an article where it has been applied you may be able to see how it goes. The key is to use [1] at the beginning of the first appearance of the source, omitting the / on that one occasion and placing a </ref> at the end. For the repeats simply put the [1] complete with the /. I hope I got that right. Best wishes, Brian Bmcln1 (talk) 11:51, 1 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
