Title[edit]

I disagree with "Ella, she has it" as the English translation of the title, and suggest [again] that "Ella's Got It" more faithfully captures the French feel of the lyric. The translation has been revised a number of times, so I'll refrain from changing it again. neil.steiner (talk) 20:52, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I once changed it to "Ella, she's got it". I can live with the currect translation (Ella, she has it):
Ella = Ella
elle = she
l' = it
a = has
but still think that that is too "formal". That's why I changed it - it sounded better. But leaving out "she" would be incorrect.

Richard, I agree that "she" should indeed be part of a literal word-for-word translation. I'm not arguing for a change, but in my opinion, the current translation misses the playfulness and colloquialness of the French title. Just my two cents. neil.steiner (talk) 02:31, 31 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What I meant was that in my opinion, while leaving she out of Ella, she's got it (resulting in Ella's got it) is not unacceptable, leaving it out of Ella, she has it (→ Ella has it) would be wrong. Richard 08:49, 1 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree that "she" should be included in the translation. Translations are not meant to be word-by-word but true to the meaning. Including "she" is the result of insufficient command of the French language (or English, for that matter). In French, this combination is simply meant to stress the subject. In English the usage is different. If someone says, "moi, je suis d'accord", it does not mean, "me, I am ok with it", but simply, "I am okay with it". Similarly, if someone asks, "la jeunesse a-t-elle une histoire?", it does not mean, "youth, does it have a history?" but simply "does youth have a history". Such differences must be taken into consideration when translating. This is such a basic matter that it is usually taught in the first year of learning a foreign language. Therefore, I am removing "she" from the title. Please do not re-add without strong proof that I'm wrong (I'm not).TobyDZ (talk) 23:48, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
