Ethnicity and Country[edit]

I just sah the EWTN TV magazine witch was telling about the live of Father Kapaun. It was very interesting he was realy a great guy. There it was said that he was Cech and his famely came from Chechoslovakia or Chechia. First it would be a big surprive if he would be ethnical Chech, because his famely name is German and the first name is typical German and Pilsen was till the second WW a strongly German city, actualy the city was the language line between Chech and German and before the first WW it was even stronger German. So the famely came either from Austria-Hungary ore from Bohemia. Thechoslovakia did not exist, but Bohemia is called Chechy in the slavic language,historicly correct would be Bohemia witch he would have probably used himselve. Combat Infantryman Badge[edit]

There have been some reversions in regards to Kapaun's apparent award of the CIB. I acknowledge that a newspaper and a US Congressmen seem to agree that Chaplain Kapaun was awarded a CIB but that does not square with the fact that by his branch affiliation he could not have been eligible for the CIB. A mistake has been made somewhere. I urge all parties to research further. It is possible that the criteria for a short period of time allowed this award. It's also possible that we have sloppy journalism from which everyone else is copying. In any case, I would ask that we avoid edit warring in the meantime. According to Army Regulation 600-8-22, Military Awards, Chapter 8, Section II, Part 8-6 (page 113 in the pdf file) there is no basis for awarding the Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB) to Kapaun. I could not find any exception to the regulation that applied to his service as a chaplain. The regulation is very limiting as to who may be awarded a CIB, and even infantry personnel that happened to serving in the area of a combat action that were not actively engaging the enemy do not qualify. I offer this information as a basis for discussion and do not have a position on this matter one way or the other. Cuprum17 (talk) 21:40, 23 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The websites of members of congress are tools of public relations and reelections, not serious journalism or scholarly research. The Army ref for his other awards does not mention a CIB or a PH, let alone the ROK PUC or the retrospective ROK War Service Medal. EricSerge (talk) 02:01, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Chaplain Holland Hope awarded CIB [1]. Chaplain Hope and Claude Newby here:[2]. Finally, Chaplain Newby:[3] Two Chaplains documented as being awarded the CIB, but a search for Kapaun and CIB comes back to the congressman's website and the Wichita paper only. My research finds: 8/13 chaplain casualties of Korea in 1950 (Kapaun 3/51), 4 of the Army chaplains were POW's in 1950 and all died in captivity, all 8 were in infantry units in Korea in 1950 and all 8 have Purple Hearts, 7/8 were WWII vets. 8 Army chaplains casualties:

James W Conner
Herman G Felhoelter
Kenneth C Hyslop - POW, CIB
Emil J Kapaun - POW, CIB
Byron D Lee - CIB
Samuel R Simpson - CIB
Kaubaun and the other 7 were more likely were awarded the CIB's and Purple Hearts during the Korean War, the CIB award regulation above is 2006. The referred to Army site list of awards says Kapaun's military awards "include" and that implies there are other awards not listed (the ROK War Service Medal was authorized to all Korean War veterans in 2000, the ROK PUC was common to infantry units like Kapaun's 1st Cavalry Div, GO 35, 1951 for 16 August - 26 Sept 1950). There are other news sites that you can find on Net with the list of awards besides the Witchita Eagle and Congressman site that includes the CIB and Purple Heart and other Korean awards the Army site doesn't include.YahwehSaves (talk) 07:55, 25 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Care to share the sources of your research? The other news sources you reference seem to be perpetuating the possible incorrect info on the congressman's site, they all seem to list the awards in the same (incorrect according to order of precedence) order. The Congressman is a Kansas representative, where Kapaun is from. Its likely the Congressman's list of awards that went to some news sites came from the US Army. WW2, Korea, and even Vietnam war had some soldiers with different MOS's other than infantry receive the CIB. Currently, it looks like chaplains serving with infantry units in combat get the Combat Action Badge. Kapaun, 3/8 Cavalry, saved Sgt 1st Class Herbert Miller, L/3/8, from getting shot and killed when captured (in the MOH citation). SFC Miller was L Company's platoon leader, so that places Kapaun when he was captured, with an infantry company, in a major action, and way behind enemy lines almost in China.
Its likely that's why Kapaun and some others like Chaplain Holland Hope (paratrooper chaplain in airborne unit in Korea), received the CIB, "For satisfactory performance against the enemy as part of an infantry unit" (1944/45, and can be awarded posthumously; but no medical officers or chaplains according to this source, [4]). Kapaun and others received it by a regulation waiver or something. The Army site doesn't have the Kapaun awards list in order of precedence either (NDSM is out of order). Neither the Army site or news sites said their lists of awards for Kapaun is in order of precedence.YahwehSaves (talk) 07:10, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
